I currently use a Fuji Fine Pix camera S4000. never been as happy with it as I was with my original S7000, and now I have an additional problem. I need to use the eye piece to see when out in the sun, but my right eye is being affected by macular degeneration. What is the the best camera for this sort of visual impairment? I would like it small and simple, but not so small that I can't get a good grip on it and hold it steady, and not so simple that I can't take very good quality macro or zoomed pictures, without a lot of fussing around. the older I get the more difficult everything gets.

I am not sure what you can do, but from viewing these pics I'd say you got a pretty good grip on things........

I am mostly guessing when I take the picture, or I try to hold the viewer to my left eye; very awkward.

First things first. Make sure you are taking nutritional support for your eyes. My wife uses Occuvite. Talk to your Doc about it. Have you tried to use the other eye in the viewfinder ? Does your camera have dioptric correction? If it does not or it is not helpful does your camera have additional eyepiece that you can attach to the camera. Maybe a call to B&H for information as to what options are available will help. Hope it wohs out for you. By the way from the great pics of the peacock feathers it doesn't look as if you have any trouble with vision.

I take the Areds 2 formula, and yes the solution is learning how to use my left eye in the view finder, or as you are suggesting a rig to make that easy. Thank you for the suggestions.

I have the same problem. Have to use the left eye. It's kind of awkward but you get used to it. Also use AREDS 2 daily to preserve the left eye.

Wish I had more faith that the pills will help. Meanwhile it is still a beautiful world out there.

I've had to use my left eye for years. Generally the worst part is constantly smudging my right lens when I'm trying to make adjustments. Honestly, I'm guessing that any camera will do if you get used to using your left eye.

The pills will help keep your eye problem in check but will not cure it. I to have a huge problem with my right eye. Most of the time I simply rely on the auto focus and hope it get's it right. Using my left eye is very trouble some. Good luck and Happy shooting. By the way great shots.

First, I'm sorry to hear of your eye issues.

Have you tried one of the 5xxx series cameras from Nikon. The 'live-view' on the adjustable screen is spectacular. Canon may have something similar. You can rent these and give them a try. Or maybe a store would be as nice as mine ( Berger Bros in Amityville, LI. I am a customer only ). They let me take the D7100 out of the store for a few hours.

I am not sure if this will help but here goes
--Nikon cameras come with a diopter that you can use
I prefer to use the viewfinder instead of the screen when shooting and can adjust it so that I do not have to wear my glasses

hope this will help
take care
Ellen

Hi Cloverleaf: I can't help you much on the camera or lens selection, but my wife has wet macular degeneration which started out as the dry variety. I assume you are afflicted with the dry ARMD? Wife's experience was she went from wavy vision to almost blind in a few days. She now gets a shot in her 'good' eye every 4 to 6 weeks ('bad' eye is pretty useless), and that brought back some vision so she is quite functional selectively, but still legally blind (can't drive, has some color differentiation problems, cannot recognize faces or much small detail etc.) My point is that if you haven't discussed the possibility of your eye going 'wet' with your optometrist, please consider it and have a plan that you can execute rapidly if needed. On the brighter side, dry ARMD usually stays that way, only about 10% go 'wet'. Good Luck.
