Don't know where any Christmas lights are but you do. If Christmas lights was your intended subject matter it is not easily understood. That's one of the basics of photography that the subject be clearly understood by the viewer. Some shots with larger F stops/ shorter time may have helped with clarity since 10 seconds is a long time. I'm sure you were tripod mounted but how was shutter triggered? Remote is best for long time shots.

PS the "noise" you mention is probably print resolution like 1200 dpi vs. 2400 dpi which is photo quality. Noise is a function of the sensor in the camera that captures the image.

You might want to try to shoot just a little earlier than dusk. It helps to equalize the brightness of the Christmas lights and the light still left in the sky. Also, use the Tungsten setting for white balance as that works best with those lights.

I like the first shot more as the sky is lighter.

I would use F-5.6/ISO 100, that will give you a two stop advantage, and still have sufficient DOF. Also one trick is exposure comp, instead of using - use a +1/3 ev, this will help reduce shadow noise.

EV stands for exposure Value measured in f-stops. F-stop is an indication of how much light can enter the lens, or how "fast" the lens is. It is the ratio of width of the aperture (think of iris of the eye) of the lens to the focal length. Each step increase in f-stop is a decrease of light by 1/2. A lens rated at 1.4 f-stops is a very fast lens (I had one once-it was great). The longer focal length the higher the maximum aperture is (no 1.4 1000mm lenses!). If you are using manual mode you just change the f-stop to change the EV. If you are using other than Auto or Manual modes your camera will have a setting that you can adjust your EV up or down two f-stops, usually in 1/3 f-stop increments.

I liked his first one better. This one looks over-exposed.
