Found myself in an abandoned town and came across these two pieces of machinery.

Can anyone identify what they are/used for? I haven't a clue...

I have a couple similar to the one you have posted here, except the ones I took did not have the wheels.
I "think" maybe it is an old steam engine, that they use to use to thrash.?

Here I go again, giving away my age. By no means a steam expert but, what you have Asylum is a 4 wheel 'mobile' steam engine (horse drawn). Blueeyes is almost the same engine but originally had two wheels. They were pulled around the farm to supply motive power for a multitude of things, including 'thrashing'.

Both of you have great shots of farm history.

Thank you for your reply Al FR-153, at least I now know I was on the right track!

Thanks All for the info!! Ian, the steam engines are in Elloree, SC right on the main drag. I was driving through to photograph a small "ghost town" in nearby Lone Star, SC and was captivated by these machines.

I started a new thread with photos of the ghost town in connection with these steam engines... http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-19141-1.html

This steam engine was a Saw Mill which I found on a hike.

Great steam tractor photo! Here is one I found during my oil exploration days in SW Africa. It's considered a national treasure in Namibia, and after disintegrating from the salt mist has been restored and a building has been built around it.
