Magic Lantern

A question concerning "Magic Lantern". I have a Canon 550D/t2i. I downloaded Magic Lantern on a 8Gb SD HC class 6 ultra. As I understand it this card must be in the camera to use Magic Lantern. Now when I talk photos they go on this card, correct? and when I wish to delete the photos on this card I will have to do them one at a tyme, yes? And if I wish to use one of my 32gb class 10 cards I must again install Magic Lantern on the 32gb card, yes? I feel like the commercial, "I've fallen down and can't get up". Actually I am wondering if it is worth it.

Thanx, Best Regards,
George

Do you download the photos from the camera or do you use a card reader..
If you use your computer with a card reader. Click the first photo to be deleted and then go to the last photo to be deleted and shift click. it will highlight every photo in between and then just do the delete.

I've never had an issue when I delete all images from the camera. Just delete all images and it does not remove Magic Lantern. Even a low level format will ask if you wish to remove Magic Lantern.

Hope this helps,

Same here. I just use the camera to delete all of the images. The delete function does not touch the ML files. Formatting the card, on the other hand, will wipe out the ML files and you will have to put them back on the card.

I know I am the best at mis-information, sorry...I always download my photos from a card reader into Piscsa, but always format my card in camera. My main concern is that if I wish to use a 32gb card to take photos do I have to have Magic Lantern on the 32gb card..I assumed that Magic Lantern was loaded in the camaera, I was wrong?
Thanx to all that replied, some day whern I think my photos are worthy of UUH I will post some..
Thanx again

The ML firmware always loads off the card. The only change on the camera is a configuration bit is set so that once the camera's native firmware loads it looks on the card for the ML firmware. If you format the card instead of just deleting the images you will need to place the ML files back on the card if you want to use ML again. Delete, don't format, to clear your card.

Too bad Nikon doesn't have the same tricks available.

You do install a ML loader into the camera once, but ML must be on each of the cards that you intend to use. As far as deleting pictures, no problem with doing an in camera format as ML software handles it. It seems to take a few seconds longer than usual, however. A card with ML on it can be used in another camera without ML, but I would recommend formatting that card on a camera modified for ML. Just don't format on your computer as it will remove assess to the ML files. It is, however, not too difficult to add the correct folder back on if it is mistakenly deleted.

Is there an updated camera model list for ML? I just went to their website and noted a number of Canon DSLRs missing, such as 7D, 6d, 70D.

JeffT, I stand largely corrected. I stated that to avoid erasing ML it was necessary to delete the images from the card using the Canon menu Delete command as opposed to formatting the card. After reading your post I looked at the ML User Guide and found the following statement.

"How do I erase all of the images without removing ML?
Canon menu -> Format -> Format card, keep Magic Lantern."

That was a bit of an 'ahah' moment and shows there is occasionally some value to reading the documentation.

After that I picked up my t2i and punched up the Canon menu Format page. There I found something that I was previously unaware of: the Format page default mode preserves Magic Lantern on the card while formatting the rest of the card. If the 'Q' button is pushed it switches to a mode where all data including Magic Lantern are erased. Thus, you can have your Format both ways by means of toggling Q.

Thanks Dave. I don't know why the ML site I got was old info. I have the 6D which is still under warranty, so I plan on waiting until warranty expires. I'm uncomfortable with the site's last statement about not being responsible for any damage to your camera done by ML. I know it's a standard "release form" type of statement, BUT........

They do include scary language about the possibility of destroying your camera in their literature. What appears to happen is that if the instructions are not followed closely and you don't notice that the installation has gone awry you can fry the ARM processor that runs the firmware. It apparently gets stuck in an endless loop and destructively overheats. I ran into that problem the first time I installed the firmware and stopped it, as instructed, by pulling the battery. Since then I have not had any problems. Read the installation and user guides and make your own decisions. I have been a happy user of ML for several years now. It wildly extended the feature set on my T2i. A good number of the features that were enabled by ML are now part of the Canon native feature set on later cameras. They don't acknowledge ML but I'm sure they pay close attention to it.

Call this my Magic Lantern Redux: I want to thank all those that helped me understand and guide me through "Magic Lantern" I have made cooperate decision, As Magic Lantern states to use 32 gb or less to download I have decided to use only 32 GB class 10 for my download. I have some 64 GB class 10 cards, why? I am glad you asked: you see when I was just starting out I thought if 32 GB is good then 64 GB should be better, hold more photos, in retrospect who has ever used all the space on a 64 GB card? So I want to thank all that assisted me, Everyone has been so helpful, thank you so very much.

Regards,
George...(George II)
