My very first attempt at wildlife (such as it is) using the techniques suggested by another member.
I really envy those that can get the birds to cooperate and pose.
A rather sad (yet exciting story goes along with this photo)
I am so sore today from hiking in the mountains yesterday that I decided it would be smarter for me to find something at home to photograph today.
Got out all my equipment, tripod, camera, telephoto lens, set it all up on my patio in the back yard. There are always birds around so I figured to get lucky.
Found one .... focused in and set the self timer ... I was just about to push the button and BAM... the heathens ran into the tripod bending the leg :(. OMG !!
I think they might have learned a few more colorful metaphors this morning. Boy did they run into the house quickly.
Someone could total my car and leave us without transportation for a while and it wouldn't have bothered me this much as the heathens touching my equipment.
(Those anger management classes are really pissing me off) lol jk.
However on the exciting side of this story... my hubby ... bless his heart .... was able to straighten it back out .. for the most part and it does close just scrapes and is a tight fit now. But knowing him as I do .... the man won't rest until he buys me a newer stronger one :)
So I got the photo .... not great but a learning experience nonetheless.... and I will get new equipment out of the deal ... so all in all not a bad day LOL.

800mm (actually 200-400 with the 2x extender) , f/11, ISO 400

Glad to hear the 'pod is fixed. I was always a big fan of leashes for dogs and young children

It looks like the camera focussed on the branch in front of the bird. It may have shifted when the timer went off - did a re-focus. You can try switching the lens to manual focus after you get it zeroed in, then hit the shutter timer. Hopefully the little critter will stay put until after you get the shot!

No I bet they run everytime I get that tripod out from now on lol ... it took them 20 minutes plus some words of "mama is not mad anymore encouragement" for them to even come near me for some lovin LOL.
When angered I have always managed to get my point across LOL

In all fairness they have never been that close to the tripod before ... I don't use it at home and they don't go with me when I'm out intending to use it.. mainly because I never know where I'll end up or how long I'll be gone.

Have you heard the Trace Adkins song, "Your gonna miss this" ? Some day you are going to look back and wish those little "Heathens" were under foot again.
Love the story. Maybe you will get the shot next time.

Yes, you need to put down spike strips around your equipment perimeter or at least yellow police line, DO NOT CROSS tape. LOL.
Very nice loooong distance shot.

LOL don't think that would be necessary now .... all I have to do is point and they move away quick .... don't mess with a mad mama.
