Security guards are not the brightest bulb in the package, they know nothing rights or law . taking a photograph does not make you a terrrorist, or a security threat . They do like to obstruct you and pretend they have power they can display. They have a job to do its not to impede your activities, they are there to prevent theft and observe problem areas.

As a member of the security industry, I find your remarks demeaning and offensive. I don't know what you do for a living. Perhaps it's your ianbility to relate to people that is causing you problems with security officers.

If you are on private property, they are within their rights to ask and demand that you not to take photos.

Perhaps these despicable storm trooper guards you occasionally encounter are simply doing their jobs. Until you know what their orders are or the rules in place at the places you visit, perhaps it is best not to comment.

I know a few get it in their heads they are the police and I can well imagine a few are Arses. But until you know the rules they must enforce, you really cannot speak, can you?

Remember, in many/most cases, you are on private property and you do not have the rights you seem to think you have. Also, perhaps they are expecting something you look suspicious.

My wife and I were shopping at the mall here in McAllen TX, rather my wife was shopping and she dragged me along to play pack mule. While she was loading up I started taking pictures of the beautiful Christmas decorations and just minding my own business. A security guard walked up and asked me what I was doing. I told him taking pictures of the Christmas decorations so I can enjoy them in July. I showed him my TX drivers lic. We talked back and forth as I continued taking pictures. Santa came by and I shot the guard talking to Santa. I told the guard to give me a place I could mail him the picture and he did. I ran off his picture and a bunch of the mall in general and sent them to him. He and I had a good time together.
Not all security guards are SS Storm troopers, some are regular people just trying to get by.

A mall security guard was instrumental in saving my life when I collapsed from a severe stroke. He got immediate medical care for me, protected me from further harm, and assisted my wife during the emergency.

I'll always be grateful for his training, skill, and competence. I trust that he's also competent when it comes to properly dealing with other mall situations.

someone told me not to take pictures in a mall store yesterday...no biggie.
I find MOST people are just regular...some think they are better than others. Sadly, some think the opposite.
Some are helpful...some not.

"Security guards are not....know nothing... they do like to obstruct...and pretend". Does not seem to be a question here - so I guess I thank you for your insight in regard to a group of people. Can you also do this with others? Maybe blacks, whites, garbage collectors and teachers......

Yeh, that was a cheap shot...security guards are not stupid as you might imply......Some have great educations and are retired and looking for extra income. I know one security guard who has a MBA.....There are rules for private property and it is there job to enforce those rules......They are human and just doing their jobs.

I deal with security guards every day and I will admit that since 9-11 they have gotten a little more fussy. As in all areas of life you have good ones and you have well not so good ones. Bottom line is that they have jobs to do and some do there jobs better than others.

I've found that asking permission to take some photos no matter where I am helps people not jump to the wrong conclusion about what I'm doing ... Not all but most don't have a problem with it. So I err on the side of caution and just ask somebody for permission.
