I will purchase the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 when Nikon installs VR.
If i used a tripod all the time the present version would suffice.
Since I shoot 75%+ hand held I love the VR. That's why I have the 16-35mm f4.
It's all about style, I guess... I have a 24-70 and a 16-35 and find I use the 24-70 for 80% of my shooting. I primarily shoot landscapes and find the 24-70 perfect. Added to my D800E's incredible resolution, the sharpness of the lens is providing me with wonderful results. And one funny thing: I had forgotten the 24-70 doesn't have VR. It's a spectacular lens!

Take a look at the Tamron 24-70, a friend of mine has it, he originally bought the Nikon, felt it was dull, sent it back and bought the Tamron...tack sharp. Another friend has the Sigma 24-70, I have used it and I would buy it or the Tamron before I would pay the outrageous price for the Nikon

Outrageous? Well certainly expensive, but a great lens. No doubt you are paying a bit more for the name, but the Nikkor is a TRUE professional lens. Made of metal, not plastic; weather sealed (the Tamron has only a gasket on the base); durable, in the hands of a photographer who really uses it the Nikkor will undoubtedly outlast the Tamron or Sigma a couple of times over.

I want to thank everyone for their input. It really helps to get different points of view and their reasoning. I really appreciate it.

I am about to take the plunge into FF. I have been looking at the Nikon 2.8 24-70, and in my research found out that this lens was introduced in 2007. Does anyone have an idea about how often Nikon releases a newer version of its lenses? Thanks for your input.
