Hi all. To any owner of this camera I have some questions.
First of all I've had this camera for a month and I have taken good pictures with it. However, I think I could do better if only I understood some settings and what they do. I have a list, but I'm not going to "download" it on you all at one time, so for now, here are my first ones;

AF Frame <flexi>
AF Point Zoom
servo AF
MF Point Zoom
Safety MF
Thank you in advance

Here is a link to the user guide. It is also on the CD that came with your camera in the "read me" folder.

Many of us have had the manual printed. I was lucky enough to get mine free by calling Canon customer service. Others have taken to office supply stores or ordered online.

Have fun!

There are several older posts that address settings used for the sx50. A lot depends on what you are shooting. I still sometimes struggle with my settings. I shoot mostly birds, but also flowers and insects in the spring and summer. Right now my goal is to get sharp shots of BIFs.

I have AF servo off.

I downloaded the manual to my iPad and iPhone so it is always with me. I have mostly used panasonic and nikon cameras in the past and find the menu system on tnis camera very confusing at times. So many are hidden and are just not intuitive. Just a few days ago I found how to change the shutter speed and aperture in P mode by reading Lillian Stokes' web site on different settings she uses with the sx50.

Also google cybertony photography. He has his complete settings on dpreview. But check out his sx50 photos on tonybritton.smugmug.com. He does very minimal pp and aims for sooc with cropping only if needed.

If you google sx50 settings you will see several links. Many are to the canon powershot section on the dpreview.com forums section. There are bookmarked settings posted by users on the right side of that forum page. Some are for macro/close ups.

It is going to take a lot of reading on UHH and other forums and the manual, plus lots of trial and error. There are many on here that take outstanding shots with this camera. I like to look at their photos and learn from what they do.
Just have fun and enjoy your new camera and try to use it as much as possible.

Thank you all.
First of all, I do have the manual, and I have red many posts about setting up the camera for different purposes. But my question was for the menu settings and what they mean/do, and how they affect the way to use the camera.
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough the first time.

If you go into the camera's "change camera's settings", (the menu with the wrench and hammer) you will find a selection "Hints and Tips" Make sure this option is "ON"

Then when in the "Change Shooting Settings" menu, (the menu with the camera icon) you will see info about the purpose of the individual selections displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Why not just order one for free from Canon? Not sure why some are choosing a different source instead. Are those you are buying from other vendors in a better format than the free printed version you can order from Canon?

Not sure why you couldn't find it.. Manuals Ink.com..... The price for 8.5 x 11 x 1/2 is $17.44.. Good luck!

I looked at Canon and all I could find was the small version. I found a full size on Manuals Ink.com. The paper could have been a little heavier, but it is much better than the small version and I am very happy with it. At least I can read it easily and find what I want. My eyes think they are old!

Oh, I thought Canon would send you a full size printed version for free. Did not realize it was actually in tiny print. Now it makes more sense.

I downloaded it to my iPad and iPhone so I can make the font size as large as I want.

If you check Linda, from Maine's earlier post, I think she said you have to call canon customer service and they will mail it to you. However, I am not sure at what size it is printed.
But either way, glad you have one that is good size and readable.
