Shot through an open window at about 20 feet with a Canon 300mm f/2.8 and a Canon 1.4 TC after doing an alignment on my 7D body.

The 300mm f/2.8 was a +4 and with the 1.4 and the 2.0 series III TC's they all checked out at +4 too.

I still have my 5D MKII to do. My surprise was that my alignment procedure didn't just change in a numerical order. With a plus change sometimes the result would show as a negative correction. I did the 300 with the 2x out at 96 feet and here is what I did. I was not about to buy the "Long Ruler" for $84.95 so I went to Home Depot and bought an aluminum 36" ruler for under $3.00 and placed the 18" mark at zero and I could still see the alignment marks on the side and it seems to work very well.

Is your 300 a newer one? The other thing I do for a fast check while out on location is to take 5 pop cans and line them up about 20 degrees off center and focus on the center can and go from there. That's if someone needs a quick check.

Mine is the original non-IS model - have not used pop cans ....yet - but will consider it !

Can you post your procedure for doing the alignment test with the $3.00 ruler?

I have not heard of this before. Could you please explain what you are doing and why would you align your lens. I am aware of listing certain lenses on my D7000 so the camera will know what to do with it, such as the Nikon 500mm f8 mirror lens, but I don't think this is the same thing you are talking about.

Thanks,

Dennis

I use the "LensAlign MKII" and if you go to their site they give a DOF and a distance chart for the alignments. They give a min and a max distance and with my longer lenses the DOF is deeper then the 10" ruler that comes standard. They do sell a longer ruler at a cost of more then the MKII itself. What I've done is to place a 36" aluminum ruler on top of the 10" with 18" being in the middle and the ruler is narrow enough that you can still see the alignment marks on the side. The ruler was less then $3.00 at Home Depot, a savings of $82.00 and it works very well but first you do need some kind of alignment product being sold.

Hi Dennis, well it's a misnomer because in fact you aren't altering your lens but aligning your body to the lens. You use AF and basically focus on a target with a means of determining where your focus is, FF front focus or BF back focus and if your camera has the capability you go into the menu and make the corrections. There was a gentleman on this forum complaining about a new lens that he had bought because on one body it was a +13 and on another body it was a -11 and he thought he had a bad lens. Depending on what body you have you could do the alignment for all your lenses even the mirror lens. Hope this helps.
