I currently have an Epson Stylus Photo RX680 and it is getting tired. Most of my photo printing will be multiple 4x6, rarely larger and if needed I would go to an outside vendor.
I have heard that Cannon, H.P. and Epson do a good job, but I want the best ink available.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Stick with Epson. I do a lot of printing; I mean A LOT! I use refillable cartridges that hold more ink than a standard Epson cartridge. The quality of ink that I get from my supplier is of the highest quality. I have been using this company for years.
They have an excellent website and they welcome inquiring phone calls. here is their website:

Very interesting - my research is starting and I have always liked epson.
Thanks everybody! I have always liked Epson quality and those units we have had have lasted and they are used a lot. Been awhile since we have needed a new one, so thought I would inquire from UHH folks. Thanks!

Funny you should mention that. From what I understand, Kirkland paper is Epson paper only without the watermark. It is all I ever use for my 4x6 prints.

Thanks for the info. My son changed printer types and gave me 150 sheets of 8.5x11 and I love it. price was right. :-D :-D
I have a Canon Pro 9000 MarkII. The quality is impeccable...but like painting a car, in which the job on top is only as good as the body work beneath the color coat, the paper is the defining factor in the finished product of printing. I have used HP and Canon paper as well as Epson. All are good quality papers. Haven't used the Kirkland brand, but it their paper is of the same quality as the rest of their Kirkland products, I would expect it to be pretty good.
As for inks, I tend to stick with the Canon inks, but have used ink from Office Max, and found it to do a good job as well.
Bottom line, when you start buying things like photo printers, I suspect they are all pretty decent quality, along with the inks designed for that purpose. Paper...THAT you need to be more concerned with.
JMHO.
I've been through two Epson printers so far. Each has produced exceptional prints especially using Epson papers.
However, I find that the ones I had are only good for about three years before they start to give me trouble. In each case I wrote Epson technical support.
I pointed out that I have experience fixing stuff and I have an extensive workshop in which to do it. I asked for some advice on how to fix the problems I had. Their reply in each case was instructive. They quoted the user manual to me that said if three head cleanings don't do it, send the printer in for repair.
This left me feeling that they must think I'm totally stupid or something. I can read and I did read the user manual a long time ago, I didn't need to have it quoted to me. It also left me feeling that they really didn't give a damn about their customers and perhaps rightly so, they seem to sell a lot of printers without providing good helpful service.
Curiously, I later got a request to fill out a survey as a result of my query because they want to "make sure that their service and support meets my needs". So I filled it out and I explained my disappointments and frustrations. There was never a reply. Clearly they really don't give a damn about their customers.
The printers weren't worth the cost of shipping and fixing which had initially prompted me to buy a second one to replace the first. But each of them was worth a day or two of puttering around in my workshop to get it working again had Epson bothered to give me a few suggestions. This current new printer is now in the garbage and I will not be buying another Epson printer for any reason at any price, ever. Nor will I recommend them any more.
But that said, they do produce exceptional prints as long as they last and if you're willing to factor in the cost of replacing the printer regularly, perhaps they're cost effective too. I doubt it though.
I'm now shopping for a new model and brand. I'll let you know what I eventually settle for. It will probably be a Canon but there are other choices too of course. Epson isn't the only printer maker.
My Canon is about 3 years old. NEVER had a problem with it...none! Bought at a seminar, so got it for 1/2 price...but still worth the regular purchase price I think...which was about $450.
Can't speak to service, cause I've never had to call them.
