Nikon is going to replace the shutters in everybody's D600 in or out of warranty at no cost to the consumer. They even pick up the shipping. See here:

That's good news. When I sent one of mine in under warranty, it was on a three-week hold, waiting for parts. I imagine that making so many shutters could be a challenge, in addition to their regular manufacturing.

Thanks, Catfish. Glad to hear Nikon finally stepped up to the plate on this issue. They have been quietly been replacing the shutter for the last several months when one was sent for service and/or cleaning. The problem I see here is a service bulletin should be sent directly to all registered owners and it should have been done months ago. Instead, sadly, Nikon kept its head down hoping the problem would go away. Well, I guess better late than never. ;)

They stepped up to the plate after a couple of Class Action lawsuits were started, one in California, one in Minnesota. This is better than what we would have received through the lawsuit, they normally only pay pennies on the dollar to the plaintiffs. Only the attorneys get rich. They may contact registered owners at some point but this just hit the streets last night.

David - I just received a personal email from Nikon advising me about the Service Advisory for the shutter. So it does in fact look like they will be contacting registered owners.

I also just received a personal email from Nikon. They changed my shutter 6 months ago when I sent it in for another issue. I will contact them to see if I should send it in again.

Ruthiel, would appreciate it if you would post what they tell you. I too just got an email. Thanks. ;)

Ruthiel -- I would send my camera in any way there is no telling whether they put the same D600 shutter in it or the new improved one. You would have to take their word on it which has proven to be less than truthful. Just my thoughts on it.

why in hell would they make a big recall and replace it with the same faulty shutter meca . just so they can do this again , come on some one is going to have to adjust some parts in your shutter .

That's not what I said - I told her that when she sent her camera in 6 months ago they may have replaced her shutter with the original D600 shutter assembly and not the D610 assembly. Other than the fact that everyone understood what I said, I have no idea what you are talking about.
