Recently there have been a lot of questions about teleconverters. I own a few different ones and pending on which lens I am using determines which TC I use.

These photos were taken using my Sigma 500 mm lens and a Tamron 1.4 X TC. I thought I would post a few photos so that others can see how it works.

I am going to try and get back later this week and take some photos without using the TC for comparison.

C&C welcome as always.

Seems to work just fine. Love eagles. Snake River canyon used to have lots of them. I've considered a TC for my 70-300 but just haven't done it. Thanks for the encouragement. Jim

Nice photos, oldtool! I can't decide on the best... they're all great, sharp and well composed.
I have always shied away from TCs as I felt that I lost definition when I used them. Obviously, I was probably the problem.

There is a lot of "poo-pooing" about TC's on this site but the good ones do work with the right lenses.
Interesting bokeh on that first one.

I am going to give my honest opinion - regarding sharpness - I would rate them as -just "OK". Certainly nothing special or impressive or bad either. What body are you using ? .....are you using any support and GOOD shutter speeds?

imagemeister,

I would not expect anything else. Yes, using a Canon 7D, a tripod, gimbal head, remote release at 1/1600 SS.

They are fairly heavily cropped though. Shot 400 to 500 yards away. Hear is the original of the first photo.

Jim,
If you don't mind, I fiddled with some post processing of the image just to see if I couldn't pull some more definition out. The images isn't from your original, but I think you could get a bit more if you went back and reworked them a bit more. The are very nice captures by the way.

If you want, I would post the one I did a bit of rework on. Not sure if it is much better as everyone has there own take on this sort of thing.

Be my guest. I have been looking at the original and think I could have done better PP so I am going to work with them using LR instead of PSE. I am always curious what others can do with my photos. That is how I learn.

All I ask is you explain what you did so I, and others, can learn from it.

I am sure using a TC with a lens this large is going to effect the IQ some but the ones I posted first just don't look as good as I originally thought they did. Maybe I over sharpened them, or they lost something being posted here?

Nice images oldtool2 !! I got my first Snowy Owl pics down near you at the East Point Lighthouse in December. Prompted me to run out and buy a 150-500 Sigma when I got home. Now I guess i'll just have to go out and find a TC to go with it.
