I am considering buying the Fuji SL 1000. I am an amateur and intrigued with the 50X ability. I have read the comparisons with similar cameras and like the features and the price. Any experience and/or thoughts? Thanks

It is priced right but I'd probably go in a different direction.

BTW Welcome to the Hog

There is a lot of brand loyalty on this forum, so you should consider that in others' responses. I don't have the SL1000 but I have used used Fuji digital cameras almost exclusively for the last 10 years and currently own and use the X100, XS1, and Hs50. The image quality is always excellent with these cameras, and I love the fact that I don't have to carry around other lenses, I don't have to worry about getting dust in my cameras because I don't need to change lenses, and I find the macro abilities of Fuji cameras to be outstanding. I'm not a pro shooter, but have paid for my cameras with images, and no one has ever asked me what brand of camera I used to shoot them.

I have an S1500 with which I have a love hate relationship. I hate the slow shutter and the wandering auto focus, but I love the overall capabilities of the camera, especially its video features. I'm trying to get off the completely automatic modes and use either aperture or shutter priority more and I've been doing better. I still take about 10 shots to ensure that I get one good one and then choose the best of the lot. The example I've attached was shot hand held with flash.

Just to clarify my post had nothing to do with brand loyalty in fact that's the reason I stayed away from further comment. I have no issues with Fuji and in fact think Fuji makes some fine cameras. If I were to buy a Fuji camera it would not be the SL1000.

The SL 1000 was on my list as well. It is a discontinued model that you should be able to get a low ball price. I'm a Canon SLR guy at heart, but I couldn't go for their SX 50 for a myriad of reasons. So I narrowed my choice down to Fuji and Panasonic models. The Panasonic FS200 had a lot of promise with its fast F 2.8 lens and rep for great pix clarity, but it only reaches out with a 26x zoom. I finally chose the Fuji Finepix HS50EXR and here is why. I shoot a lot of action shots, everything from football, basketball and soccer. When you are shooting action most automatic zoom cameras fall flat on their face, particularly when you are reaching out with one of today' long zooms. By the time you get there the shot is gone. The HS50 gives me the option of going totally manually, ie: manual zoom, manual focus, manual shutter speed and aperature. This puts me completely in control. If you are just getting into photography it has a good auto mode, but the zoom is still manual. The electric auto zooms just don't cut it for a true action photographer. The original MSRP was $599., but the price has dropped to around $369. There isn't a bridge camera out there that shoots as fast as this Fuji. Picture quality might be a tad below the Panasonic with its Leica lens, but it is very close. Fuji is coming out with a new S1000, but it has an electric control zoom. Too slow for me. I did a lot of homework on this choice, but I'm very happy with my final verdict.
