Do you geotag?

My workflow involves melding gpx tracks with folders of images to assign locations. This requires having the camera clock synchronized with universal time. Fortunately, ViewNX2 via Nikon Transfer provides a way to sync the camera to my computer - if I remember to do that.

This past week in the field, I figured out a quick way to determine the offset. (I suggested to Nikon that they display the offset when synching the camera and got a "why should we care?" reply.) The screen clip shows the NX2 screen displaying my photo of the Garmin GPS shot as I saw the minute flip in the display. The camera clock is one minute seven seconds offset from universal time with an error of my reaction time.

I use Friedemann Schmidt's "Geosetter" to apply geolocations to the images and it provides a way to correct locations if the camera clock is off.

Admittedly this is a bit anal-retentive because, at my age, a minute isn't too much walking distance and the GPS is only good to 3 m at best. But if I was flying, it would be considerable.

This only takes a minute to do with each camera, mostly waiting for the minute display to flip.

Universal time is the upper left number on the GPS

My workflow involves melding gpx tracks with folde... (show quote)

I remember reading in the manual for some electronic device that they do not guarantee that their clock is going to remain accurate over a long period of time. I think it was in a camera manual.

Thanks for providing the Geosetter reference.

I am probably 100 years younger than you and I don't want to know where I am even when I am there. Just the other day the google car came by and now I guess everyone knows where I live. I hate GPS. I hate google. Oh, and I might as well throw cats in there while I am on my rant.

I do use a cheap GPS gizmo from time to time. Many when I travel and shoot in the middle of no-where.

It is useful to locate as to use it on google maps? Rarely as I do not publish my pictures. This is more for me than anyone else. Just want to know where I was...

Hi Dan, I am a geotag fan, I use two methods:
1: I have a P&S which records the location into the EXIF or
2: I have an app on my phone which stores the location.
Then when developing the RAW images from my main camera I copy and paste the GPS data into the EXIF.
I have tried your method without much success.
Cheers, John.
