I don't have a reference but I read that the reason moiré is no longer a problem is that most post processing software can negate it, making the in-camera filter unnecessary.
Most of the guys on DPR who have used the 800 and the 800e extensively say the e definitely has a slight edge in sharpness. Whether that is worth the extra $300 is a personal choice. I bought my D800 refurbished and saved a bundle so didn't even consider the e. Yes, the D800 is most amazing!
