I started with a d-60 and got tired of changing lens, My wife got me the 18-200 lens. This is a great traviling lens in my opinion. The only issue in Europe was low lite indoors. I purchased a 35mm 1.8 it works great, This lens is the 50mm equivalent on your camera. I have upgraded to a d7100 and got a 28-300mm Nikkor nens, I love it but may not be wide enough for everything. I think the 18-200 or 18-300 would be a great lens as you will not have to change the lens untill you go indoors. I have not tried the 18-270 tamron lens but owners seem to love it. I like the all in one zoom and low lite prime lens combo as it allows me to enjoy my travels and still get some great shots without being too cumbersome.

Got a d3100 with the standard kit lens and am working on my photography.
We're going on a trip to Europe- traveling on trains and I don't have a lot of room. I bought the 50m f/1.8g lens. I was told it is the best all around lens to have. Since it doesn't zoom, it has a bit of a learning curve. I originally bought the 35mm and returned it. Don't have a lot of room. Did I make a mistake. I want to take 2 lens at the most. Prefer to take one. Any suggestions.

I've had the good fortune of traveling to Europe on three occasions taking thousands of images. On each occasion I carried the 35mm f1.8 (52mm equivalent)which is a terrific lens and my 18-200 f3.5. Both are Nikkor lenses and both served me very well on my DX Nikon body. I used the f1.8 primarily at night. For the amount of $$$ invested in lenses and bodies, I am very pleased with the results.

I appreciate all of the responses. But I am a little confused by the answer of 35mm vs. 50 mm for my d3100. I went to an into photography class and he told us to get a 50. If I am taking a lot of indoor shots, is the 35 all around indoors and you still get the advantage of taking without a flash. Which gives better pictures?
And as far as the teles, I don't want to spend more than 250 on a lens.

Interesting momofmany ... Your instructor recommending the 50mm should also have accounted for the format of camera being used .... I looked up two UHH FAQs that might help explain better than I can.

Your 50mm is a highly regarded lens at a relatively low cost of entry. Maybe this was your instructor's thinking. But, on your camera and the crop factor of the sensor, it will shoot more like a 85mm lens. (Math will give a different number but most manufacturers provide a lens at 85mm...) If your subject seems too zoomed (close), just take a step back if available. The 35mm G f/1.8 is the same price looking online this morning. Although you'll have the wider angle of view that is closer to 35mm film with a 50mm focal length lens, there's no reason to change nor even be concerned. Your ability to open the aperture to f/1.8 or slightly smaller such as f/2, f/2.2 and f/2.8 is the feature of both lens that will serve you well indoors without a flash.

Much thanks for the information.
I learned so much. If it tells you that the d3100 is a Dx camera, it doesn't explain it in any terms that make the consumer understand the crop factor.
Its given me a new perspective in the way I take take and deal with the pictures in post processing.
Very helpful!
