Which speedlight should I consider for my Nikon D3100, I will be needing one that will work with strobes?

Please tell us how you will be typically using a speedlight. Situation is the best guide to what you need.

Studio strobes do have a photoelectric eye that can sense when a flash has fired. You would probably want to get radio triggers to trigger studio strobes. There are variety of different makes on the market. I use a PocketWizard Mini-TT1 on my camera because I like the low profile. It's a transmitter only. The unit on the strobes would need to be a transceiver like a Plus II or Plus III. The Mini-TT1 and Flex TT5 comes in models specifically for Nikon and Canon cameras. Sometimes only one radio transceiver is needed and the other stobes are triggered by the main strobe.

I agree. If you get a speedlight, it will add light to the picture from the camera, which is not always what you want.
