When I thought about another challenge to host I thought about what I usually shoot besides landscapes and critters. And usually it is family and friends but rarely do I pose them or ask them to look at me. So mostly I shoot "from the hip or drive bys" catching those moments I like capture for my own reasons. These candid shots are sometimes very pleasing and I have learned to go ahead and delete the ones that don't turn out so well. Roadrunner has mentioned his "knee" shots where he is driving along and sees something to shoot and braces the steering wheel with his knees while he gets the shot off through the windshield. This is what I call a real "driveby" and I wouldn't suggest it unless your on a backroad with no traffic similar to those you see in RR's works. I've learned if you are out and about looking for that candid street shot you will want a wide angle lens, set the focus to auto and faster shutter speed and a deep depth of field to have the best success.

This drive by was from a train window and that deer stopped to look back at us as we traveled through her woodlands

Hip shot shooting backwards after the dog walker and I passed each other in opposite directions.

another reverse shot after passing each other....

Opps, I think he heard my shutter release. (also this is why a 50 mm lens is not as good for this type of shooting as a wide angle.)

I had a nine hour layover in Washington DC. While I was waiting, I was sitting there playing with my camera, and nobody seemed to notice or care. I love taking candid shots, so I set the camera on my knee and surreptitiously started shooting away.

sounds like fun I love drive-bys...often I see a street scene that has to be a drive-by as there isnt any way to stop and get out....looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with...good examples!
