I took the following sequence of shots in my backyard of the gas line markers across the canal. The distance is very close to 75 yards. I used a golf distance measuring system to the pin. All the shots were at f11, ISO 640, in AV mode. The lens and camera was on a tripod, with a loose head. The shots using both tele-extenders were manual focus. The 1.4, is Kenko, and the 2X is Tamron.

This appears to be an incredible lens. Thanks for sharing. Wouldn't have expected to 2x to be that clear

I think the lens and extenders seem to do a great job....

I am also using a Canon 7D and have read quite a few reviews of this lens, all gave a glowing report.

One wildlife photographer who normally uses a Canon 600mm f/4 tested the Tamron 150-600 against it and was impressed enough to even think about having it as his main lens.

It is hand holdable for BIF whereas the 600 f/4 certainly isn't.

Yes it is slower but in good light it produces fantastic results.

Please post up more shots Bill as this lens shows a lot of promise :)

I agree, this lens does show promise. I took it to the local pond on the golf course, and really was not impressed with the lens. I had a very hard time hand holding on some geese near the pond. I really didn't plan on going to the pond, and it was very cold. Today it was a bit gusty, but not cold as yesterday, that's why I took it outside today. For some reason my tripod became a little wobbly in the head. I brought it in and found the head was coming loose from the legs. I bought it used, and found the previous owner used WD-40 for a lube. After time it gums up, and wrecks havoc on any equipment, guns, or anything it is used on. So, I had take apart the head on the tripod, and clean everything. Now, it is fine, and locks in place as it should.

Bill,

Great shots. I have gone from agony to hope seeing & reading your post. Last night I read, to my disappointment a post by imagemeister ( http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Tamron-150-600mm-f5-6.3-Di-VC-USD-Canon-mount-lens-review-New-contender ) about the test results of DXO which stated that the Tamrom 150-600 and a Canon 7D was a Very Poor Quality combination compared to the lens being paired with a full frame camera.

Your pictures have given me a lot of hope that I made a good purchase of this lens to mate with my 7D.

Beyond the combination of the Tamron lens & the 7D, I would not have thought that any extender would have worked - wow!

Thank you for sharing this information.

Tamron built this for use mainly on a full frame camera. None the less, people don't have to run out and buy a new camera for this lens. Reasonable thought would prevail that if it fits on a cropped body it should take great photos too, but with a larger angle of view. Keep in mind your 7D is one of the best for wildlife, and action. So, when your lens arrives, don't worry, just go out and get ready for some wonderful shots.

Bill,

Thanks for posting these photos. I was surprised to be able to read the "pipeline warning" on the post with the TC's.

Were these taken using A1 Servo?

Tom,

Bench Marks are fine if all you want to do is test a mess of lenses against each other but I don't hold much faith in them. Who knows, they may have a bad copy. When tests like these are done they should use three different lenses, then they would be accurate.

To me the proof is in the pudding. Let me see the photos. So far I have been reading about a problem but I am not seeing it in any of the photos being posted. Bills photos are good examples and no sign of a problem. For a lens in this price range of this size they look great. Pixel peepers might have a problem but for most wildlife photographers it is looking like a winner.

Thanks Jim,

I have been using the lens with my 7D and getting use to the combination. Here is an Eagle picture from along the Mississippi River in Northern Wisconsin.

The eagle had to be at least 100yards out over the river from my shooting point.

I have cropped the photo but getting to track birds with all 600mm will take some practice.

I appreciate your help.

Tom

i've been reading about this lens, contemplating it as an upgrade, at least in terms of reach, from my 100-400L. the problems i've been reading about concern using this lens in AI servo mode on "older bodies" like the 7D, where it apparently has problems tracking moving objects in servo mode. have you found this to be a concern with your 7D? it's not an issue with static targets, and apparently doesn't cause a problem with subjects moving across the field of view, but it seems to be a problem for things moving toward or away from the camera...
