Does any one know why Nik software is not usable in Elements 10 unless I import film negatives as color images even though they are B/W negs. I then have to convert them to B/W and the Nik software is usable then. Why can't I import them as B/W and then use the software for B/W images like Silver Efx Pro. Am I just doing something wrong. These were B/W negs from a Bronica that I made a single exposure back for. I was just testing the back for light leaks etc. and could not use Nik software unless I selected color negs or color prints on the scanner
Import with what?
I use the Epson V500 scanner software and scan direct to a .tif in B&W. I can open a tif in most anything, including PE 11 and Lightroom. From there I can send it to NIK. Color is never involved.
I'm not sure, but if you are using PE as a scanning tool, it may rely on a generic TWAIN driver. That may be where you color problem is.
Here is a sample from a 70's Tri-X:
I ran into this myself, wondering why I couldn't edit a monochrome image I'd downloaded from UHH. I found the workaround. Once you have displayed the image, use Image>Mode>and click on sRGB. Now it will open in Silver Efex Pro.
Thanks guys The sRGB worked best. You would think Silver Efex Pro would allow you to use a B/W neg. Changing the jpeg to sRGB is technically changing it to color isn't it. Oh Well it works thats all I care about. I'm using a Canoscan 9000 and it will scan B/W negs up to 1600 dpi before I have memory problems. If I inport from Elements the twain software only allows 600 dpi. Thanks guys. Now I can start playing with my Bronica single exposure back that took me almost 3 days to get right. As usual the hog has the answers

Since Silver Efex Pro is usually used to convert color photographs to monochrome, I suppose I can appreciate that it uses sRGB mode. Realistically, it's still a B&W image, but now you can use all their presets and embellishment tools to really make your images pop. Have fun!
I know this is years old but Thank you Bob Yankle for this. I had the same problem, tried dam near everything else then did a search here. Thanks for being here.
