It was a cold rainy day in Philadelphia and I was getting ansi. I wanted to take some pictures but the weather outside was prohibitive so I decided to go to a local indoor mall and see what I could find. Neat-O, There in front of me were 100 windows stocked full of a thousand possible images. So, if you don't know what to do with yourself, head to the nearest mall and start shooting.

Way to change a marginal day because of weather and make it a winner...I like them all, but #1 I like a bit better.

I've tried that several times and have the mall security on me in seconds. If you have a p&s which you can quickly put away, it probably works better.

Your mall trip sounds like fun. Before this winter is over, we may all be heading for the local mall. Love the pictures ~

I am curious as to the reasons for not allowing one to take pictures in a mall. There is an obvious blurring between private and public property and the meanings thereof.
What would they say if you were taking a picture of a friend or family member in front of a store window?

When I want to take a picture inside a store I always ask permission. I wonder if I should do so when taking window pictures. I once asked a rent a cop why I could not take pictures inside a mall. He really didn't know so he said,"It's against the rules". Daaaaaa

Is there a difference between rules and the law? Whose rules,
who made them, why and where is there a copy of said rules?
Lots of questions for which I'm willing to surmise there is not a lot of information. I certainly agree with asking permission inside a store which implies private property. If I take a picture of a building outside usually no permission required, inside permission required.

having been both a mall public safety officer and a law enforcement officer the malls can restrict photography, teenagers with their pants down to their knees, or ban people who are swearing because the mall is PRIVATE PROPERTY. they do not need a reason. However ive been told its to protect the copyright of each retailers sighnage. also so that other stores can't take photos of how their competitors merchandise3 and display their products. Finally, there is this old expression from the 30's dillanger days called "casing the joint" photographs are a big help to the criminal gangs to id security measures, cameras, alarm buttons etc.

Thanks for the information. No shoes, no shirt, no service principle applies. The copyright factor is important inside or
outside. If the mall owner has such a policy, even the mall
area outside individual stores would apply.
The next area of concern is in the parking lot for example. Still on private property technically, but does the mall owner (not the individual shops) have a policy of no photographs, videos, etc. that is a lawful restriction. In our ever more litiginous
society it is important that we do not inadvertently cause problems for ourselves. What would happen if I met cousin Joe
and took his picture in the parking lot with Macy's signage in the
background? Assuming this is for personal use and not for commercial gain.

Thank you all for your explanation re "no pictures in the mall". I guess I really didn't think it through, I was just p----d. I understand it now but I still don't like it. It takes away some great photo ops.

It doesn't appear to me that you have any proprietary material in your images. I say snap away until they explain why you can't.

Seems to me that the simple things get too complicated and over thought.
