Looking for a 80 - 400 lens (or somewhere close) with auto focus and VR for Nikon 7000 for around $500. Any ideas or forget it? DMF

$500 with stabilization? If you find one it likely won't be functional. $700 is about as cheap as they get for a decent copy, and don't expect full accessories for that most of the time.

Hey DMF. Never skimp on lenses. I know it's easy to say but hard when they are so expensive. Good Glass will last much longer than your current camera.
I realize you wanted a 400mm, but the Nikon 70-300mmVR is reasonably priced and will serve you well without breaking your bank. It will also stay in your arsenal in the event you ever move up to FF cameras.

Or he could buy a new one for $2,300. It doesn't look like the same lens, though, although the description is the same.

The new 80 - 400 allows a TC, the older model which I have does not. I have an70 - 300 also and it is a great lens, and is really 450 with the DX (D7000) crop factor.

Post this as a question on the Main board, and you'll get a solution.

Make sure it's a JEPG, and about 600 pix on the long side. Click on Choose File, find the image, and then click on Send. You have to have a message in the message box, even if it's only a period. Do not click on Preview.

Well...for $449 you can purchase a Tamron 70-300mm that will do a marvelous job. I use on on my D600 in both FX and DX modes...(DX if I want 450mm reach). Adorama has them:
http://www.adorama.com/TM70300VUEOS.html

Has VC (Tamrons VR) and is a very sharp, pretty fast AF, too.

Really a great lens for the money, and I think there's still a $100 rebate on it from Tamron til the end of the month.

RE: Nikon 80-400 D lens. This is a wonderful lens if you shoot slowly...the AF on it is very creaky as this was Nikon's first VR lens and it doesn't have a SWM. It will focus with a D7000 but it's not fast, so if you're looking to shoot sports or even birds on the wing, you may want to try something else. The AF-S 80-200 is verrrry pricy right now.

Good luck
