I am thinking of buying a set of Cokin grad filters, probably the Z pro set. I do a lot of wide angle landscape photography so would welcome any input concerning these filters before I spend the $320. for the kit..

Hope they have improved since I last used their ND/Grad grey filters, because they all gave different colour castes ie Cyan & magenta. Perhaps not so important in digital pic's as it was on colour slides.

Leicaflex Loc: Cymru

Cokin will do a decent job for you, but it is the old saying, you get what you pay for. You state you are interested in the 'pro set', which indicates you have quality lenses. If that is the case, you want the best.
Take a look at Lee Filters, they are regarded as the best. They are hand made and they are expensive.
I started out with Cokin, but soon moved the LEE Filters for my Leica lenses.
Others are 'Hitech', 'Tiffen' (American), 'Kood' to name but a few.
Graduated filters come in 'Hard or Soft' so you need to decide what you require them for IE 'Landscape'

I changed to Lee filters, perhaps 30 years ago. Still using them, from digital to 5x4 formats.

I have the cokin filters, but soon abandoned them in favour of the Lee type; you can get secondhand Lee filters usually in very good condition; alternatively buy one at a time and build them up- you won't regret it.

I too have many Lee filters which I love but have one Hitech reverse grad nd which is a decent filter. Of course we can't forget Galen Rowell and Singh-Ray filters also very good (and expensive).

I started with Cokin but then bought Singh Ray a little at a time. I know Singh ray are expensive but as I said I started one at a time.

I have used cokin for many years and they have never let me down. Lee filters are fantastic but expensive as someone else stated buy one at a time and slowly build up your collection.

For someone that has tried both, what would be the noticeable difference between the two?. Does the difference justify the price of the more expensive one. I have no experience with these type of filters.

I have both Cokin and Hitech Z-Pro size ND Grad filters, and have not seen any appreciable difference between them. Both have done the job I've asked of them quite acceptably. I have not seen a noticeable color cast associated with either one.

Doug,

I have the Cokin "P" set from the mid 1980s for my PLY OM-P4 film camera, they still work very well on my Canon EOS 1000D system. No color casting, not mars, no scratches.
I have place a small number of the filter in storage because I no longer need some of the special effects they provided.

Because the filter set comes with a removable lens protector you can always place the filter back into is plastic carrying case, and not worry about protecting your lens.

Just want to thank you all for your input on Gnd filters. All your suggestions were appreciated. I do believe I am going for the Lee filters only because I don't want to upgrade later. My understanding would be a soft #6 would be a good start for me. Please advise if I am out in left field. Thanks

I haven't looked in a while but when I bought my first Lee filters I purchased their starter package which if my memory serves me correctly included the holder, adapter ring (obviously order for your biggest diameter lens) and two filters of which one was a .06 soft GND. The kit was somewhere around $300. Check their web site for details.
