Welcome to the group Sandy. That lens should work on the D3100.

Hi Rocco thanks nice to be here. I tried last night and pictures just came out black i think i have to have it on a certain setting.
The AF lenses won't auto-focus on the D3100. If you don't mind manual focus, go for it, otherwise, you'll need the AF-S lenses.

Hi Sandy and welcome to the UH.....and your off to a great start :)
Welcome! I have the D3100 and I love it. It is a great camera for someone learning to use a DSLR camera. The auto settings are awesome while you still have the option of learning how to use the manual settings for more enhanced photography. One lens that I love is the 55-200mm Nikkor lens with vibration control and auto/manual focus. It is normally $299, but you can get it right now at
www.ritzcamera.com for $146 no tax or shipping. For a low end Nikkor lens, it performs beautifully!
