D7000 focusing issues

I have a D7000 that I am just learning about. I am currently having issues with the camera focusing on the foreground rather than the subject being shot usually my three boys. If I have it in Live Mode then it will focus on their faces with the face recognition but I do not get the same results looking through the view finder. Any advice would help. Thanks.

I also cant figure out how the Face Recognition mode works only in Live Mode but not through the view finder. Info about that would help too!

You might get a few more answers if you ask in the photography section and not the introductory section.

The face recognition only shows up when the monitor is on, I believe.

See page 97 of your manual. This will explain step by step how to set focus process to allow you to focus on a single spot as indicated in the viewfinder by pressing the release button part way down and holding while you re-frame the shot if necessary.
