I have read on other forums where some people have soft focusing issues with the 60D and had to send the camera back for adjustments. Anyone here have any knowledge regarding this? Jusst Google the subject. Is this just a bad batch?

Well I tested mine. I used a tri-pod and 3 different lenses-- these are each at 100%

I did a test with my "L" lens LENS TEST as soon as I got it-- I wanted to see the color/clarity difference or not.
I decided the only way to test it out is to mount it on a tri-pod and do more than one lens to compare.
I am sure there are professionals out there that have a system for this.
I tried to test it with a person --but with people there are too many variable--like they breath and move :)

Very well done Dria. Thank you for showing it to us.

I have a 60D which I bought in April 2011 and it works perfectly with the EF-S 18-200mm kit lens and I get very sharp images with a 50mm 1.8 lens. It makes a difference though when shooting at full 200mm some 110Meters away hand held v/s leaning against a solid object or on a tripod and even remote wire release. I love both the camera and the lens that I have heard people refer to as very near L quality. I have no buyer remorse.
It does make a lot of difference just how much I put into it. I have many throw aways and many times I use the camera as a point and shoot when the sharpness is not so important. You get what you put into it and the value for the money is unquestionable.
Thank you again you are a real pro in my eyes.

Thanks again for this info. I'm off to purchase my new 60D this morning, but of course it is on back-order but I like the sale price on it.

One more question is what memory card do you like to use with this camera? The sales person says the sandisk extreme 16 GB on sale for $37.99 which is supposed to be compatible with this camera but the reviews on it are not so good. I believe I'm looking for a 16 GB 10 speed card.

16 GB 10 speed should be your minimum. I use Transcent and never had a bad one. I think they are garanteed for life. Someone adviced that it is better to have 2- 16 gig cards vs one 32gb. I dont know but next one I buy will be 32 as they are getting cheaper all the time. Seems good for long time storage.

Are you shooting in live view? My 60D is definately soft (inaccurate focus) in live view. Fortunately, it is easy to correct by magnifying the image and using manual focus. Then it is amazingly sharp because the mirror is locked up in live view.

In conventional view, it provides accurate focus with all lenses.

I don't currently own the camera yet but while reviewing it I ran across this discussion about a soft focus issue on this camera. I'm getting ready to purchase this camera today since I know longer have this concern thanks to Dria and yourself. I appreciate your input.

I do not have a problem with my Canon 60D nor any of my lenses.

Hi Dria: I know I'm off subject but I'm curious how far away did you set up your tripod away from your test subjects and what kind of lighting did you use?

Human error often is made with af lens, where focus is an issue, any time you feel there is a problem make sure the af is turned off and manual focus...if you have live view follow the information already provided from another post. L3

For the orange test. (for test I have linked/Pinocchio I was 7')
MY tripod was set up 6ft from the stand that the orange was on.
Lights= 2 , continuous light 5500K behind soft white umbrellas

I also used remote release.
I did not use live view --- simply because it would do me no good as I never use it anyway.

I think it is more likely a bad batch of users . I think people should check out their cameras on a tripod before they decide the camera is faulty.
