I've been lurking around here for a couple of weeksnow , so it's time to introduce myself - Mike, Dallas Texas
I am soon to be retired and bought myself a new Nikon 5100 with an 18 - 55 and 55 -300. (I just came back from Costa Rica and I'm comvinced that I will need to upgrade to faster lenses. Many millennium ago photography was my hobby - Nokkormat FTN, but other that shutter speed and aperture this is a whole new world.
Looking forward to everyon's "kind" support.

Welcome aboard.
In it's simplest form, it's not that different: you can still set exposure, although the "ASA" is now variable, and you set the color balance instead of picking indoor/daylight film and carrying filters. Most of the rest is fluff and marketing.

Welcome! Nice camera! Just wondering what class SD card you are using. Shortly after buying my new camera, I acquired a class 10 which made all the difference in the world.

Not sure. I use the 4gig card that came with the camera and bought two 8 gig crsdds. I'll check when I when I get home. Is there a rule of thumb on what class is acceptable?

The higher the class, the faster the speed the images are transferred from the camera buffer to the memory card. The advantage of a class 10 card is you can capture many images in quick succession. I just thought you might want to check this out before getting discouraged with your lenses. I had the same problem when I got my D3100 and after a little research realized that my SD card was slowing everything down!

Thanks, I'll check.
As far as the lenses, my problem is that they are too slow. Back in the day, my 50mm had a 1.4 f-stop.
My new 18 to 55 is f5.6 at 55mm. That severly limits shutter speed options. But I'm loving the camera.
If I onlay had any creative talent.....

Welcome Mike, I'm in Garland and have been to Costa Rica recently. Looks like you probably got better pics than I did. It was 'Green' season.
