I am wondering what experienced users consider appropriate/best pixel ( PPI ) dimensions for big prints ( 30 inches long dimension ) and small prints ( 11 inch long dimension ) ? Also the best PPI for monitor only viewing ?

For printing BIG, I wouldn't go below 150 DPI unless it was a billboard. It much depends on viewing distance.

For monitor only, it probably doesn't need to go ABOVE 150 at the very most, unless you have one of those $20,000 studio Sonys or something. Your average PC graphics system and typical consumer monitor max out at maybe 96 or 110 DPI but monitors are all over the map these days because of the lack of a univerally agreed-upon measurement unit. When a 3" phone screen can (legitimately) say it offers 300DPI viewing pleasure, but a 24" LCD screen is pushing it at 96DPI, what's a mother to do?...
