I believe it is a sharp-shinned hawk. the coopers has a white throat and cheeks the sharp doesn't.that is according to the Audubon bird id book which uses pictures for ID.

If the Hawks knew and understood what we were going through, trying to identify them, they'd have a good laugh. We humans are crazy! I must be too! My choice is a Sharpie!

Hi all, This Hawk has been in the yard the last few days, picks off a bird and then sits in another part of the yard to eat it. Looked like a morning dove the other day and a smaller finch like bird today. My wife would much prefer that they just eat seeds like the other birds.

Anyway, I think it is a red shoulder hawk but my neighbour thinks it is a Northern Goshawk. What do you people think.

Thanks for looking and your help

Pretty certain it's not a Goshawk. I showed your pictures to my wife who participates in hawk migration counts. She says it's an adult Sharp-shinned hawk, based mostly on the body shape and streaking on the chest. The red eyes are the clue that it's an adult. The behavior also is a clue to identity. Not all hawks will chase birds on feeders. That's typical of a sharpie though.

Hope that helps.

The tip of the tail in your follow-up shot appears to be rounded. That would indicate a Cooper's. Does have a very thin set of legs though. I f we only had something for scale.

I have a friend that has a Cooper's hawk that takes birds almost daily at their feeder.

Sharp-shinned hawk. Not a doubt.
