OK, you guys in the North, I know it's not as bad as what you have been getting, but in the South, it is a major event. The Coast of North Carolina where I am got freezing rain and ice pellets, but the temps will be in the 60s this weekend to melt it. As soon as there was an appreciable accumulation on the roads, the 4wheelers were out in force. I expect to see many of them in the ditches tomorrow on my way to work. :-D :-D :-D

This is about the farthest north that palm trees grow - I'll bet this one is considering moving further south

Tomorrow, we here in Eastern Iowa will see a few hours of above freezing temps for the first time this year. :-) :-)

Never thought ice like this would turn up in SC. I bet the dogs are thinking of moving with the palm tree. I particularly like the ice on the evergreen shot.
That is one sad looking palm tree! Loved your series and captions, AuntieM. Enjoy the weekend!

We had more snow and less ice than you here in Fayetteville. It was pretty!!
I bet that palm tree would like to move further south, too. Like all the way to Florida!
Stay warm!!!
Love #4 :thumb up: If you are not used to this, and you don't have the equipment and resources to deal with this kind of thing, it can be devastating. Since it happens to us on a daily basis up here, we are just prepared. Also, people acclimate to the weather. It's been in the minus twenties for so long where I live, when we get a - 6 like I had yesterday when I went out snowshoeing, it feels like a heat wave. I actually had to take my mitts off for the last part of my snowshoe jog because I got hot. LOL :-)

Oh and now all the Southerners are blaming the Georgia Governor and Atlanta Mayor for not making them get off the road before the storm hit.
If they want to be prepared like the northern tier of states, then I hope they are ready to fork over lots of $ to take care of a once a decade event.
Now for a
happy thought. This prolonged deep freeze in the northern midwest should, according to a local entomologist, have the effect of decreasing the bad bug populations next summer.
Nice set of photos. Will be curious to see how that palm tree fares. And I believe I could make out the island in the distance.
Thanks everyone. Things are starting, albeit slowly, to melt. I suspect that what is melting will freeze tonight, but happy thoughts abide that it will be in the 40s tomorrow and 60s by the weekend. The great problem here is that there are no plows. What plows that are working are from other counties in the vicinity, and they haven't gotten the knack of putting the blade on the roadway, which leaves a bunch of stuff on the road after they have passed. You would think that with all the sand we have on our beaches someone would load up some and at least throw that on the roads - since it is from the ocean they would have sand and salt all in one. The other problem down here is that most people have what they call heat pumps for heat. They are supposed to remove heat from the air and circulate it through the house. At freezing or below there is no heat in the air, or very little, and the electric heat strips in the units have to kick on to heat up the air....very expensive. Hubby and I put up with that for several years after moving down here from Central NY, but now have a "gas pack" which is an air conditioner with a propane fired "furnace." This is very toasty in cold weather, but propane is now over $3.00 a gallon.... Being born and raised in snow in the north, I know when to stay off the roads with southern drivers that absolutely do not know the dangers of driving in these conditions. In fact some southern drivers can't drive on dry pavement, let alone ice. My boss wanted me in the office today, a drive of 25 miles, one way, over 6 bridges, but when he was slipping and sliding on the ice in his 4X4, in the city from only a few blocks away from the office, he decided to call work off again today. No offense to southerners intended, but it would be like me going to Arizona in the summertime, and taking a hike in 100 degree weather without having enough water, sunscreen, or otherwise knowing the dangers. I can't believe Atlanta didn't shut at least the schools down the day the storm was predicted to hit. Here, if there is even the possibility of one snowflake, the schools are closed. Bet they won't do that again!!!
