I shot this bird the other morning and assumed it was a juvenile black-crowned night heron, but as I was uploading the shots, I realized that this guy has yellow rings around his eyes and of the numerous shots I have of both juvenile and adult members of that species, I have never seen one with yellow-rimmed eyes. The first shot is the bird in question and the second one is a juvenile black-crowned night heron shot within a few minutes of the other. These were shot within the last couple of days or so. As I searched my bird guides, I cold find nothing with the yellow rimmed eyes. Thanks for any help.

That's the problem. I probably have 50 shots of juvenile night herons and I have to see one with yellow rings around its eyes. Maybe its a very young juvenile.
Take a look at
www.whatbird.com and use its search wizard to try to narrow the details down. You may have some success there IDing this guy. Good luck and please let us know.

This photo shows a juvenile night heron with yellow/orange iris of the eyes .
Thanks Fergus, that is what I thought it was for various reasons, not the least of which there were a lot of juvenile and adult night herons about, but no other juveniles had that yellow ring. That URL you supplied, however, does depict one like that so it is what I thought it was. Thanks.

Thanks Mile, I encounter both juvenile and adult ones frequently here - I have a large collection of night heron shots.
