I have been an ER nurse for 35 years and the last time I cut a ring was over 20years ago( unless it was mangled and crushed). This works even for heavy swelling that looks like it would never come off. It is slightly painful, and does take practice. Its also harder if the ring has heavy filigree or large settings, but it ALWAYS works on wedding bands for sure.

The slight pain I described is from the elastic/string compressing the swollen tissue. It is relieved as soon as the ring passes over the knuckle.
Tips: 1. Once the wrap is done and you start the removal process, dont stop and always pull the string away from the palm (toward the fingertip)

2. The wrap material needs to be somewhat wide. String will work in a pinch, but we use umbilical cord tie material (approx 1/8 inch wide and flat to slip under the ring). Its available online at surgical supply distributors as Umbilical Cord Tie or Umbilical Cord Tape. (Or find a friend who works at a hospital)

Thanks much for posting this. I had a wedding band cut off many years ago and wish now that I had known this at the time. Looked at a couple other videos linked to your posted video and liked this one very much also. Good old duct tape of which we always carry a small roll for various reasons when out on trail maintenance. :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbt8QkZWAZY&feature=player_embedded

First saw this about 40 years ago while working in maintenance for local hospital.Elderly patient didn't want her ring cutoff for surgery. After several minutes of her screaming "Please don't cut my ring" a doctor did this to get her ring off while I stood there waiting to cut her ring. He kept telling her he was going to charge her 50 dollas if he didn't have to cut it. Her knuckles were quite large from arthritis I guess. Wam Bam Thank You Mam off it came to everyones surprise. He used some type of string and really compressed the finger;but it slid right off.I've done it twice since then for a couple friends and it worked both times very well

Pretty neat. Mine's been cut, and put back together twice.
