I have replaced the lamp in my Sony for the last time as this time it seems that a lamp alone will not fix the problem...

So in looking at the LED TV's, based on quality/price/budget I have boiled it down to Sharp vs Samsung but can't seem to figure out which is the best buy in the $1000 range. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Hey Geff, Samsung makes an excellent product. They seem to be at or near the top of quality ratings for all of their products.

Thanks Dave, was liking their Blue Ray as well as it will be a dumb TV and the Blue Ray will serve as its connectivity.

Don't have or want a game console.

Samsung. Buy the Smart TV. You won't be sorry.

We bought a 52 inch Samsung 3 D plasma set about 18 months ago and have been very pleased. Plasma allows wider viewing angles than typical LED sets, and blacker blacks. However, the image is not as bright, which for us is no problem since we can darken the room easily. I don't know whether a 60 inch plasma is in your budget range. BTW, we bought a wall mount from Newegg for under $50 and mounted it ourselves. A lot cheaper than a mount from BestBuy, let alone their charge for mounting. Not a difficult job, just take it slow and careful.

It is replacing a 55" Projection LCD so we already have a nice table for it in the family room... I just hope that it lasts longer than the old TV.. Seems that the Sony did not last nearly as long as my Hitachi that still operating fine in a different room. As far as Plasma goes... they look nice but from what I have seen the LED's have a pretty good picture quality also... have to leave some money for the next time lens fever strikes...

I compared them all a few years back when I bought the big one we have. We bought a Samsung, for a couple reasons.
1st obvious quality of image.
2. I used to install Semiconductor manufacturing equipment. We installed ION Implant systems at Samsung, Songtan Korea.
Having been to fabs all over Asia we were impressed with the quality of the fab, the serious nature and interest the management showed in ever aspect of the installation. These things are 30,000 pounds 14 foot wide 12 tall and 28 foot long. The fab manager took a personal interest in the quality and precision of the placement of the tool and the precision with which it was being installed.
That impressed the hell out of the install crew.
As an aside our kitchen is Samsung appliances.

Samsung is top of the line in tv's.
"LED" tv's are actually LCD with LED backlight, there are 2 types of led backlight:

As far as smart tv is concerned, Id go with the dumb tv
and a set top box like Roku.
Most Smart tv's have very slow interfaces due to small processors.
Set top boxes and home theater systems handle the " smart/ Wifi " part
much faster.

Plasma is supposedly on the way out.

Blurry,
the most common and biggest problem associated with a plasma TV is burn-in. This occurs when there seems to be ghosts of the images on the screen. Panasonic has ended production of plasmas and resale value will be lower. I think they are on the way out. The picture is quite good however a Samsung LED is hard to beat. LG comes in close with a comparable picture at a modest price reduction. Sony is overpriced. I did my homework before I purchased my 65" Samsung Smart 3D and am VERY happy with it. No problem at all with viewing at an angle even way across the room. Friends with flat screens are always amazed at the Samsung IQ. With the Smart TV you have access to the internet, web browser, YouTube, Netflix ( a real deal, unlimited movies @ $7.99 monthly), download TV software updates, etc. Bruce is right with his critique. Samsung! Samsung! Samsung!

Thanks for the advice, that was kinda my original plan, it seems that computers change so quickly I read that the set top boxes make sense because to upgrade the box is less expensive than upgrading a smart TV, I was thinking about a Blue Ray but a lot of people complain about their data transfer as being slow... so maybe a box makes sense, the Samsung is $350 off right now so that is maybe the best bet.
