My opinion? Strive to get it right in the camera, but thank goodness for photo editing software.
Get it the best you can in the camera - then post process whats yet needed. Shoot raw

say what you like and lie in private. if in doubt call it art!
A "Photographer" gets it right in-camera, an "Editor" tries to make it right in Photoshop.

Get right in the camera. Make better in Photoshop.

And an "Artist" is one who can do both!

An Artist does not need both.

I'd agree, the really artistic photographers I know don't "need" both; they are very capable of going either way to get an image that most of us can only wish we could execute as well.
At any rate, to paraphrase Barry Goldwater:
Support of post-processing in defense of creativity is no vice. And let me remind you also that the insistence of SOOC in pursuit of conformity is no virtue.

My nephew worked for Disney as a photographer for awhile and told me how he'd go out and just click away and then turn his SD cards over to the editing department never having seen most of his shots. Many of the editors were very talented but couldn't tell you which end of the camera was the front. In my mind while most can both shoot and edit they are two different skills and two different things.
