This Great Blue Heron caught a nice fish for lunch. I think the fish is a tilapia. Can anyone help identify this Florida fresh water fish?

Outstanding images...may I ask what equipment was used and how close you were to the bird?

Looks like a tilapia to me...again, awesome captures....

Nice shot! Looks like a tilapia to me. Our condo assoc. stocked our ponds with tilapia and a special type of carp to keep the algae and grasses down. Our resident GBH will only eat the tilapia.

Wow - what a meal! Did the heron manage to eat it?

As for ID, the fish does not look like the shrink-wrapped tilapia fillets in my freezer :)

Thanks hb3! I used the Canon 7D, Sigma 150-500, on a tripod (for a change) probably 50 feet from me. I shot it at 340mm.

Hi Linda. I'm glad you asked that question. This was the first time I have ever seen a GBH turn down a meal. He played with it for a long time. I was sure he was going to gulp it down but after several attempts at swallowing it he simply laid it down and walked away.

BTW....it doesn't look like any tilapia I've had on my plate either. :)

I am impressed on how the fish was speared by the peak, was not aware of the force of those birds. If it is a Tilapia, hope it is not from China, recently read alarming news about the unsanitary conditions those fish are raised in China, then sent to other countries to eat.

Thanks for the follow-up. I've read that they can choke to death on too-large meals.

They use their beaks like a spear with surprising speed and force. Thanks for commenting!
