Due to another related thread on the subject, a potentially interesting thread comes to mind.
Just what is a photograph?
Just what is an image?

Although photography as we know it did not emerge until the 19th century, the word photograph evolved from the ancient Greek words (phos) meaning "light", and (γραφή/graphê), meaning "drawing/writing". Combined together meaning "drawing with light", creating the word for taking pictures.

(To be fair, both the "pinhole camera" and "camera obscura" captured life representations long before actual chemical development and preservation of those representations was possible, altho possible in later centuries.)

To be technical and by shear definition then, a photograph is created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, or (in today's standards) known as film. From Joseph Nicéphore Niépce who in 1826/1827 created the oldest known surviving permanent photograph formed in a camera to Louis Daguerre's "daguerreotype" in 1838 (believed to be the earliest photograph to include people). When Niépce died in 1833, he left his notes to Daguerre so that his work would be continued. Into the next century, new processes, new developments, "modern" advances were continually made until the film that we all love today was created.

But wait...technology again advances. We now "shoot" digitally.

Now without getting all "techie" on y'all, digital "photography" is performed by the ability to transfer an "optical" converted electrical charge along the surface of a semiconductor. By definition then, is digital representation then still a photograph", or is it "merely" an image?

In summation, photographic advancements have been made from the earlist conception of "copying" until...who knows what the future bring?

Pardon the length, but felt it needed to bring forth dialogue. Your thoughts?

An image does not become a Photograph until it leaves the virtual world, it is then that an artifact is created. An image can only exist in the Mind.

I was waiting for the obligatory answers that are dismissive and all beside the question.

How can you hope have an answer here with the ... who kill any type of exchange?

Consider this as the "BIG UHH PICTURE", not an image, not a photo, just a freeze frame of this site.

The funny part is that stating the 'truth' is not welcome and neither is honesty. I am surprised that you are dismissed as well despite the potential interest of your question but then again, same folks.

An image, in my opinion, is a 'naive' representation of something that can be both real and imaginary. It can be more real than the 'picture' we mention so often in our mind.

A photo, on the other hand, is the rendition of an existing scene as seen and 'interpreted' through a camera.

So does a 'picture'. We usually use "I can see it" or "I can picture it".

Actually it is in par with your subject as imagery to depict a situation and create a picture that we all understand...

It is a relevant topic for discussion. But then again the simple fact that I am interested (...) obligates some to dismiss it as w/o interest or am I paranoid?

Naw...not paranoid at all. Just someone else who desires to know as much of chosen craft as possible. In other words...not "just" a shutter-clicker.

To me photograph refers to a print, particularly one created with light.

A single question: What is a slide since it is rarely printed?

You are right but it defeats the 'printed' idea. Going from there, a digital representation on a screen is also a photograph, don't you think?
