D-I-Y or buy a new one. It looks like Apple charges $250 to repair an iPad 2. Here's a video on replacing the screen. If it were mine, I'd first try to remove the screen. If I could do that without damaging anything, then I'd order a replacement.

I understand there are two parts on the screen. Digitizer and outer screen. Do you think the digitizer needs to be replaced if the outer screen has a crack?

Fortunately I haven't had to but I know it can be done if your capable with those sorts of things.

I put an Otterbox "Defender" on mine the day I bought it.

No experience dropping the iPad but I did drop my iPhone. After looking into trying to repair the screen (I could still use the phone, but the screen was shattered) I decided to take it to the Apple store for advise. They replaced it for $49! I was thrilled with that wonderful customer service! Don't know if they do anything similar for the ipad.

If you're near a local Apple store, try there. Replacement screen might be a lot cheaper than sending it to Apple.

Check with OWC(Other World Computing) or Small Dog Electronics for a quote on a repair. iFixit.com should have the tools and parts if you DIY.

Seems there is quite a cottage industry for replacing screens. Here in West Texas it is about 1/2 that of sending to apple. Check local listings. Some special tools are required if doing it yourself.

I have successfully replaced the screen on my iPad 3 using youtube videos. I'm not a mechanically savy guy. It took a couple of hours. Most of the time was spent picking the glass shards away from the adhesive. You'll need a heat gun to be able to seperate the glass from the adhesive.

Canadiaman;
Can you please tell me more. I also have a hairline crack on my iPad2 screen. I am planning to change the screen, I am wondering if do I have to change the digitizer as well or just the outer screen?

I did it three months ago. Dropped it onto a concrete floor. Mashed the corner of the screen. Apple took it as a trade in and gave me a price break. I don't remember how much. Mine was the first generation of Retina screen. You might just walk into a store and ask them.
