Trying to get a handle on this process. Seems to work if I hold in the AEAF button then press the shutter. Is this right? Focus lock (When I see the dot in the viewfinder). Shot objects all around to room at various distances pressing the back button then the shutter. Amazingly my vertical grip MD80 buttons are working as expected. Any suggestions?

You have to go into menu and assign (AF-ON) to the AE-L/AF-L button. Page 200 in the D-90 manual.

You want to press the button (AF-ON or AE/AF reprogrammed, depending on the buttons) until you have your subject in focus, the let go while you move the camera to recompose and then press the shutter. This is mainly useful in AF continuous-servo mode. In AF single-servo mode, pressing the shutter half way locks the focus, so you get the same effect. Though if you get used to BBF, then it makes sense to use it all the time.
