Has anybody done business with 42nd St. Photo? I am looking at a canon 70d and they have a good price at this time and I am interested in upgrading from my canon 4ti. I have not heard of this place before and am seeking input from UHH members, positive or negative. Before I make any moves with them. UHH members seem well versed with the Photo stores... Thanks

Yes, I've done business with B&H Photo and they are very good and deliver good quality service and equipment, also very good prices.

I bought an advanced point and shoot (canon s110) from them for my girlfriend. their price was better than anyone else by 20%. I got a call before shipment to allegedly check shipping method, but then they tried to tell me I need a $100 card to support video in that camera. What a joke. I Knew the ruse, and said no thanks. They did honor their price on the camera however. Just be careful, they do try to play games to up sale you on accessories.

I got the phone call and hard sell like redrocktom mentions; sadly, I did NOT just say "no!" Camera (Canon T3i) was fine. Bundled accessories, like a tripod, were worthless.

Just before I bought my 70D (from B&H) I asked several of the local pros about 42nd St. They have some great lens prices. I was told that many of their prices are so good because they will break up kits and sell the components separetely. This could play havoc with warranties. From what I have read Canon, and probably all the major brands, dictate selling price. Super low prices would seem to indicate something funny going on. Broken up kits, grey market, refurbs. Could be any of that or none of it. I have no personal experience with 42nd. I opted to stay away. Just relaying what I was told by pros who have been in the business for decades. One does a lot of work in Manhattan and is familiar with all the major retailers there.

Thanks to all who responded to my request for information on 42nd St. Photo. Your replies were really quick and appreciated...Thanks again. My canon 4ti body is available to anyone interested. It is a good camera for photos and video, but I am moving up a little.

30 years ago, I bought everything from 42nd, then the y went Bankrupt. Someone has brought them back, but I have no opinion. I enjoy dealing with B&H and Adorama.
By the way, when did Camera World of Seattle cease to be?

Years ago they tried the same tactics with me. Also more their techniques was to call you after you had ordered, and say the item was out of stock, and would be shipped when it came in. If you didn't want to wait, they would try to sell you a higher priced item. Of course your lower-priced purchase never came in! Have to be on your toes every minute. Never ended up buying anything from them.

This is such a problem with so many places. It's like they're shooting themselves in the foot. All they do is establish a bad reputation for themselves.

I've bought from 47th St Photo going back to the 1970's, so maybe 42nd St is trying to capitalize on their good reputation.
