I have been wearing the same DOMKE vest since the early 80's, very durable, very comfortable, and more pockets than I can count. Here is a link if you want to check them out.

Keep in mind a vest DOES NOT take the place of a good bag.

I'd not entirely agree. How much protection does your gear need when it's hung about your person? Unless, perhaps, you're married to a baggage handler... I've quite often carried all I need for the day in a vest.

Cheers,

R.

I use a military tactical vest which has ample pockets and of course made to military specs so it is extremely durable. Vests labeled as phot vests seem always to be overpriced. Check the military sites before buying.

I have a scott vest that I'm VERYhappy with. Has loads of usable pockets, is comfortable and well made. Look at their website, you'll like it.

I have a HUMVEE vest and love it. Around $75 at local store.
Also you can look at a Turkey hunting vest. I have one of those for my wildlife stuff and it really works well. Lots of deep pockets and will carry my sigma 150-500 with ease in the back pocket.I purchased it at a hunting outlet for $40. Great deal.

I just checked Ebay. There are around 500 listings. Use search words 'photo vest'. They were various styles and locations from Boulder, CO to Hong Kong.

I'm glad you asked this question. I am a very "low budget" photographer and would never have thought about the army surplus angle without everyone's input. Thanks

I have seen a travel vest on LL Bean site that looks like it would make an excellent photo vest. Plus return it with no problems if you do not like it. It may be called a safari vest rather tan travel just can' t remember. Best customer service company on the planet.
