Why are monitors all so wide? It's like viewing everything in the letter box format. What do you all use for monitors?

I use an IKAM VH8 and love it. The wide display allows you to adjust the size of the picture to different ratios, and also display all the camera settings. I use it for both stills and video.
Yes. I have a Canon T21 and Canon 70D. I use them both for still photography and true HD videography. I use the monitor when shooting stills in the studio. I also mount the monitor on my jib boom when doing videos. I couldn't work without it.
I like the wide screen, it gives me a lot of options. My viewable monitor area is 11 x 20 inches. I mostly use Opera browser, with tabs on the sides instead of on the top. Side tabs are also available with FireFox and Chrome.
I adjust my readable area by clicking on the edge of the viewable area and using the arrows to adjust it to any size I prefer. This allows me to expose as much of the desktop as I want; for shortcut icons I use regularly, or to view images I'm working on.
I've attached a full-screen shot to show what I have.

I need something a little larger than 8 inches for my PC as I use it for everything.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were using the monitor for. I use two 20" monitors on my PC, but do almost all my photo and video editing on my Mac with a 27" monitor. The larger monitors allow you to have several windows open at the same time without them overlapping each other. Just resize the windows and push them around to wherever you want them.

One note of reference Pepper,
It took me a while to stop laughing when you said you were looking at 8". But I calmed down so I could respond to your thread.
I would try and look for an LED IPS monitor since both the brightness and contrast are vastly improved over older LCD displays. Also, the viewing angle is significantly wider for true color to be observed on IPS LED display monitors. I use ASUS PA-248 and 278 monitors and have been impressed with their color rendition and picture quality as well as their quality of construction. They're built like a proverbial "BRICK S**thouse". I also like the ability to FAST charge my equipment with their auxiliary 4 USB 3.0 device ports.
My next monitor will be 4K and at least 32".

It was a general screen, photo, television change that took place, I believe, with HD video.

 On the ASUS PA 248. A fine monitor at an affordable price. When I put my Spyder 3 on it the changes made from the factory settings were minimal. With my Canon Pixma PRO 100 and Lightroom 5 printing is pretty much WISIWIG.
