Sigma 150-500 Lens and Canon 50D

I am thinking of buying the Sigma 150-500 lens f/5-6.3. I would like to know if my Canon 50D will autofocus at 500mm with the aperture at f/6.3. Does anyone have this or similar combination and can let me know if it works. I need autofocus for these older eyes. I may have to drop down to the 100-400 Sigma at f/5.6 or the Canon 100-400.

Thanks in advance for the forthcoming information.

A CANON man once said to me that Autofocus begins to struggle with apertures smaller than around F4.5. You might get away with a smaller aperture as systems get better. No experience in this - just what I heard. Depending on what you are shooting is LIVEVIEW with the 10x option worth considering for focusing.

I have the 150-500 on my T3i and it works just fine. You need to remember that at 6.3, most any camera is going to be a little slower. As for your 50D, i would think it would work also, but can't be sure.

I use that lens on an old Rebel xti, and it works fine. Your 50d is a newer, better camera, so I'm sure that you will have no problems.

I have the 150-500 sigma. it works well with my 7D. The lens focuses slower on heavy overcast days. I also use the 1.4 teleconverter, it will not auto focus with that. live view helps. Old eyes as well.

I have several customers using that lens on the 40d, 50d and 60d bodies, as well as some Rebels, it AF's just fine on all of them, within the limits of the AF system itself, some of them do search a lot to lock focus.

I have the 50D and the Sig 150 - 500. No problem! So, go at it, and happy shooting.

I have this lens, and it works fine on my 40D. Have not tried on my 5D yet.

Presently I shoot with a 7D, and 50D. Both cameras focus very well when using the Tamron 200-500. If your not dead set on the Sigma, Tamron will be releasing the new Tamron 150-600mm VC lens in just a few days. VC is Tamron talk for Canons IS. This should be a very competitive lens. I'm thinking of getting one myself for wildlife.

I have to Tamron 200-500, and have used it on my Canon EOS 40-60D with no real issue on Auto focus. I use it for birding only. I always mount it on a monopod or tripod..
