Yes, Hal Schmitt is an excellent instructor, He also has a Nik course there on Silver Effects Pro that's also free.

I've managed over a couple of months to make the time and it is WELL worth it. While created for LR 4 it is also applicable to LR 5 which is what I'm using. The entire 17 hours is free, therefore no price. Without question one of the best LR tutorials out there.

I followed his suggestions in setting up Lightroom and I import and catalog the way he instructed.I hope he produces a Lightroom 5 supplement.

I didn't intend to buy, but I was curious what he was selling it for. Apparently, he isn't. The free offerings look very good, although I haven't watched any yet.

Bloke, right-click your uppermost folder holding photos. Here's a pic of the resulting dialog. Notice the "Show Parent Folder" option?

Ok, back again... I tried selecting this, and it took me off to another folder in 2013. I tried it again, and sure enough, 2014 is now there, with the other subfolders under it.

Thanks for the help - but can you now explain what we just did? I really don't have a clue, and I still don't understand why this happened just to 2014 and not any of the other years. I don't think this was to do with my trying to import from the card, because the first couple of subfolders were done the 'old' way, copied into place and then imported directly from there. Something had to be different, but if I screwed it up somewhere, I don't know where. Hence, I could easy do it again...

I do appreciate your help with this. At least now I can start processing some of these files without worrying that I might have to import them all over again. My new camera gear arrives tomorrow, so there could be a heap of new photos coming on soon - we have a long weekend, too!

Thanks,

I have not encountered this, Bloke, so cannot address it directly without some testing on my own. As you have noted, the DNG file ends up a bit smaller than my NEF files. I am rather confident in saying that I doubt Adobe is resizing the file, but I'm not sure about the numbers you are seeing.

Looking at the files themselves in LR, they are still listed as being 4000x3000 images, so that is the same as normal. Just freaked me out a bit when it started showing the pictures smaller!

So, it seems another task on my list is to go back and convert all the CR2 files to DNG. Here's an interesting question: if there is an xmp file, do you think that the changes represented in there would be carried into the dng as part of the conversion?

I am trying to import photos directly into LR from the camera's memory card, for the first time. It does not do what I am expecting.
Firstly, I have LR set to open for import when it sees a memory card. It does this when I plug in my old P&S, but not the SX50. I can go into it manually, no problem but it doesn't detect the card automatically.
Then, I try to tell it where to store the images... I have a folder called (very imaginitively) 2014. I want a subfolder to that called 2014-01-14 Clouds, in this case. What I get is, an empty folder called 2014-01-14 Clouds. At least, empty of files. What it *does* have is a subfolder called 2014. That has a subfolder called 2014-01-14, and *that* contains my files.

I know not to move files around from outside LR, but when I go to the library mode to move them from within the program, they are listed exactly as I wanted in the first place. The extra 2 levels of folders are not listed at all. How can I correct this, if LR shows a different file tree than windows does?
The only thing I can think of, is to move them manually, then let LR find them "missing", and guide it to their correct location. This is a real tacky work-around! I don't want to keep introducing invalid data into the database...
Anyone have any ideas? I followed the instructions from Scott Kelby's book - or at least, I *think* I did!

Reread the Import chapter- there are many options: Year- day- date Is one. I believe after year it'll either be day and date or a file name, but not both. Your choice.

I don't see that in either LR4 or LR5.

When you click "IMPORT" you get a black dialogue box asking where to import from; whether to convert to DNG or just copy; and where to store the imported files.

if you import from a card reader, a good quality one, you will not have any problems if you correctly tell LR what your import instructions are

No, it had nothing to do with your cards. It is simply a configuration issue on the way you display your work. It likely came about because you just recently created your 2014 folder (with the new year) and you were not configured to display the parent folder.

Lightroom has an enormous amount of functionality and I predict most of us use only a fraction of it. When I first bought LR 3.0, I bought the LR Classroom in a Book and read through it. It explains each and every function of LR, including the issues you have been facing. I set my installation up, according to the book, and have not had to change it during the upgrades to version 5.0. So, it's been a while since I made my settings. Had to get some refresher to respond to your questions.

At any rate, I highly recommend that book. Amazon has it, for sure, and likely many others, but if you want to take advantage of all LR has to offer, it will help tremendously.

Good luck. Glad you're working.

I would not expect it to do that, but LR amazes me regularly!! Test it on an image or two. I'd be interested in the results of your testing!!

I can't help you here. But I can empathize completely. Adobe shot themselves in the foot when designing the database. It is way too difficult and doesn't work that well unless you follow the convoluted system they designed. I think they designed it that way so it won't be compatible or in anyway similar to other cataloging systems that are very intuitive on the market.

The program is a good program, it is just the database structure that sucks. It will take you a while to figure it out. I have been using it since the beginning version, and still don't find it easy to save catalogs and make backup drives at the end of each year.
