What camera should I buy

When someone asks this basic question, what should we ask them to supply other than what's below?

What do you want to shoot the most of? (family, portraits, sports, landscapes, street, macro, flowers, nature and wildlife, underwater)
Do you want a point and shoot, bridge, or a DSLR?
Are you moving up from a point and shoot?
What is your budget?
Is your budget for camera body or body plus lenses?
Have you already narrowed down your choices?
What is your experience level in photography?
Have you visited a camera store to feel the different cameras? Yes a camera's balance and their button location make a difference.

These are all good. I think budget should be at or near top. Also, a lot of people have no idea what a bridge camera is.

Good idea you have. Should be very helpful.

Honestly I get so tired of this question that does not make any sense that I avoid it.

The bridge was put in there as a check of photographic vocab. Maybe a link to a web site with photographic vocab would be good.

But what could they include to have it make sense?

Let me change the question then. :-D I need to buy a new garden-hose for Spring. Left mine out during the recent cold-snap, and it froze and burst. Any solutions as to how to prevent next Winter? Which new one should I buy?
        • How long do I need?
        • How thick should the hose be?
        • What type of material would best fit my climate and watering needs?
        • Do I need a reinforced hose to handle tougher tasks?
        • What specialty hoses are available to maximize watering
effectiveness?

Can you tell it's Monday night?

NOTHING will make sense onto such a generic question.

Now if one came here and typed:
I am planning to purchase this camera. Does anyone have this model and give me their user opinion on it?

THAT would make sense.

The rest just show how lazy folks are in their research and how little they know about what they really want.

Is that answer on topic?

Yes it is, but some people don't know where to begin their questioning/learning process. They have not created a mental structure for the process. That is why they ask here. A dialogue helps people set up their parameters and then they feel competent to look further.
Its like a puzzle. They are trying to put together the edges without a picture. And the edges to a photographic equipment puzzle don't have any straight sides.

"Some people" needs to do a minimum. If they do not, what is the point of even trying to help them?

Some people don't know where to start. They don't necessarily have to answer the OP's questions for some one else if they will give the questions some thought, do some research on their own. On the other hand, "some" members would not help a drowning person until that person had "minimally" learned to float without assistance. That kind of attitude is just plain mean!
