Hello everyone. Central Iowa "BIRDNUTT" here for the first time saying anything. I have looked at many of the beautiful photos on this site and am amazed at all the beautiful scenics, birds, and animals, etc. I do not feel qualified to submit my photos yet among all you professional types as all mine are taken on an old Olympus C-730 only 3Mp. Always enjoy all the tips and discussions on various cameras, lenses, tripods, setups, etc. For the first time this winter I started feeding a few birds on my deck and noticed one Junco with a broken right leg but can fly as well as any of the others. It feeds belly down not up on its feet like the rest. Sure hope it makes it through the winter. I have photographed other birds like Nuthatch, a pair of Cardinals a pair of Downey Woodpeckers, Bluejays, Flickers and of course the pest English Sparrows. I don't have a Avatar that I would feel good about submitting yet either. I am very new at this site and only discovered it about two weeks ago. Now it is time for you to scare me off. Woodnutt1937

I also am very new to Hedgehog. I find it refreshing that the people are truly friendly and not trying to impress you with knowledge. Seem to be quite helpful. Good luck and don't be afraid to post!

Welcome to the "Hog" !!
You will find quite a few friendly folk here that generally are ready with good info and comments.

Consider checking out this topic, there are some looking to have some meets around Iowa:

For an avatar, since it so small you could use most anything you like. Crop one of your bird shots to only include the head, or a full body, etc. You can change it any time you want so you 'could' rotate a few different ones if you want to.

Welcome to the fun woodnut! I almost used that name when I joined the site.:) I like to carve so I thought it was fitting. And that is what the wife calls me when I am carving.:) We have all started with smaller cameras. My first one was a Brownie, and it has been a long time getting to the Nikon D300s.:) Show us your work with the Oly. We don't bite. We are here to help and enjoy others work. But most of all have fun with us.

Welcome to you! Wahawk invited you to our forum trying to get a few Iowans together.

I do have a bird feeder question. I have recently (for the first time) put up two feeders. I purchased thistle and song bird seed from a "reputable" garden center. They have been up for 5 weeks. Two cardinals sat in a nearby lilac bush and looked at them but NO birds are feeding at them.

What happened?

Will take some time!! If they weren't up before the cold and snow hit, it can take quite some time for them to come. Maybe the location is too close to something that bothers them?

Could be. I'll try moving them.

You'll like it here, Woodnutt, people are genuinely helpful with very few curmudgeons... Everyone started somewhere, I remember when 3MP was a huge improvement over previous technology. Get a cool avatar and jump on in...

Welcome to UHH Woodnutt. Every one of us had to start somewhere. Don't be timid. Most members are most willing to help, that is how we learn to get better. Post one of your bird shots as an avatar, that will break the ice for you. Enjoy the forum and have fun. And do post some of your work.
Don
