Your horse's hair seems to harmonize with the graininess of the rest of the portrait...they "go together" very well.

Here is original. First I cropped the image to where I wanted it, played with blur til I was satisfied, made the image grainy, converted to gray scale. added vignetting then played around with duotone till I was satisfied. Just a lot of tweaking. Then save your settings as a preset in case you want to use it again. This was done in Lightroom 5
