This insight from Seth Godin is a great way to approach giving the feedback others ask for. Some on this site ask for critique but what they are really looking for is applause and so get offended. Granted, most feedback on this site is sugar coated back slapping. I think it is hard to denigrate other individuals as opposed to bitching about "them or those types".
I went to a fine art school and the critiques were usually ego deflating, scathing sessions. It is one of the classic tenets of art school, listen and learn. Sure wont duplicate a roundly panned piece of work or technique.
