Hi all,

I've used the magic lasso and cut out a boy's body and have it on a transparent layer and am trying to move it to another photo but it keeps sliding UNDER that image that is also open in PSE 11. I can't copy and paste. I can't bring either image to top or bottom. Can anyone help please? I've been watching you tube video after you tube video to learn all this stuff lately and every time I think I've got it I hit a brick wall when actually trying it myself.

Thanks in advance for all your generosity in sharing your know how.

Donna

Donna, open the layers panel and when you have dragged the transparent background image to the image you want it on, drag its layer to above the background layer in the layers panel.

Thanks, Morning Star, but no matter where I move the layers the image of the boy just slides UNDERNEATH the photo I'm trying to put it in. I've just closed everything without saving and am going to start over. Gonna search for some more youtube trainings before starting again though. If you have a great resource for learning this I'm open to it.

I have done in 12 by creating new (regular) layer on destination pic, then just copy/pasting the item to that layer.

Donna, reading your initial post again: Why can't you copy and paste?
Select the image of the boy, press Ctrl + A, then Ctrl + C. Select the background image and press Ctrl + V.
That should be it.
With the move tool, you will now be able to reduce or enlarge the boy, or move him around.

Same as what I was suggesting, except that by pasting to a new layer in the destination image, you have a bit more control with edits. (she said confidently, having only learned layers a week ago :) )

I was going strictly from memory here, but I think in this copy and paste the new layer is automatically created. Will double-check when I get home tonight.

I did it finally. This video is what actually helped me the most:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFioBL5mqvE

Thanks for all your help. I think I will emblazon these shortcuts to my forehead:
ctrl j to see your selection in its own layer
control c to cut
and control v to paste

I still have sooo much to learn but it's so exciting when I finally GET IT! (-:

Thanks again!

Ctrl + j simply duplicates the high-lighted layer, or if there is still only one layer there, it duplicates that one.

Right click on the layer you want to move ans select duplicate.
You will see a dropdown list with all open files, select the one you want and copy it there.

Ok, another tiny issue. I have inverse selected a family portrait and applied a gaussian blur to the background which looks great. My problem is that I can't get rid of the marching ants around it - in other words I can't save my final product even when I click save selection. Any words of wisdom here?

Never mind. I hadn't actually put the selection on another layer. Ctrl j did it.

Thanks for all your help. I'm now going to turn my attention to Creative Live's 2nd day of Posing. Yesterday was awesome! Highly recommend.
