I am about ready to purchase the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 for my Nikon d7000 (next body upgrade will be either the d610 or d800). I have been reading about the newer Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC and it seems like a very good lens as well. What I've been able to pull out of my study is that the Nikon will AF quicker (critical) and has a bit less vignetting. I can afford the Nikon, but don't want to give away $ either. The Nikon is also a 77mm filter and I can interchange with my better filters from my Nikon 70-200 f2.8 UV as well as polarizer (about $350 savings there vs. having to buy new filters for the Tamron).

Am I thinking correctly on getting the Nikon vs. the Tamron? Any experience with both?

No experience with the Tamron although I've had the Nikon for years. Its an excellent lens.

DXO rates these lenses the same optically. The Tamron is nearly $600 less than the Nikon. As for re-sale value the Nikon will do much better than the Tamron.

Its a tough choice unless you are budget minded.

Get the Nikon and you will never have regrets. Simply stated it is an outstanding lens- one of Nikon's very best Pro lenses and built like a tank. Worth every penny. ;)

My brother has the Tamron on his D7000. He loves that lens. He uses it more than any other lens.

I have the Tamron, deciding factor for me was the VC, as I shoot in low light many times. It's an amazing lens, however build quality on the Nikon is much better, color rendition on the Nikon is better. I use the lens on both a D7000 and a D600, it performs better on the D600. If I had to do it over I would probably still get the Tamron, budget and VC

I have been shooting the Tamron for about a year and have no complaints. I chose it over the Nikon because of the price. I also have a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and don't see any appreciable difference in the picture quality between brands. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

If you move up to the D800 you will see the difference. It will show every potential flaw in everything, from your technique to the lens. It is a fabulous camera and demands a fabulous, not just very good, lens. Don't skimp on filter quality either.

I rented both lenses about a year ago and decided to go with the Tamron. In fairness, I rented the Nikon lens for a week and got to shoot with it for 3-4 days. Then I rented the Tamron for a 3-week period because BorrowLens.com was running a special where the extra days were included. I used it extensively over the December-January holiday season so perhaps the extra time helped me decide in favor of the Tamron. I found image quality to be similar for my purposes and the VC was a big plus for me. I haven't had any regrets.

For a slightly longer range, Sigma 24-105 f4 has received a high 24 score from DxO, I believe higher than Nikon 24-70. It is new, part of their "Art" line so don't know long-term quality.

I wanted the Nikon,, but to save money I went for the Tamron and the 'IS' on the Tamron was a pulling factor, But because I only ever use it for Portraits using Flash I never use the 'IS' so i really wish I had gone for the Nikon,,,,

But why? Is it because you feel the pictures would be $600.00 better? If I had the money to get it, I would pick the Tamron over Canon in this particular instance because you can't convince me that there will be a noticeable $800.00 difference in my photos that I could create. Sure, if money is no object then always go for the absolute best, but the quality difference in images created, to the average person, is negligible.
