Just found this forum and at a perfect time....I had been looking for a new forum. I have been an Olympus user for some time but recently bought a new Canon SX40 HS. I am thrilled with the zoom power of this 'easy-to-carry' camera. I found my DSLR just too much to carry when I take trips so I'm very happy with my new camera.

I like to shoot photos of all sorts of things, from barns to birds, mountains to seas, sunrises and sunsets. I hope to share and learn with the members of this forum. I need to search for

A local scene from last year...Merry Christmas!

Hi Lucy, and welcome to the UHH.

I recently purchased a Canon SX40 and I love it. It takes great pics, and the telephoto is awsome. You're the first person that I've heard going from a DSLR to a point & shoot, but if that's what works for you then go for it.

May you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New Year.

Well, I grew tired of lugging the dslr on my trips, so decided this was a better option for me. Personal preference and great reviews from this camera.

Welcome to the Hog Lucyel! Are you having a nice East Tennessee Christmas? Had to smile when you said where you are at, I have been listening to a Chet Atkins album called "East Tennessee Christmas". :) Cute Christmas card, are they all your cats?

Merry Christmas from Indiana!

John

Hi John....thank you for the welcome. Yes, I'm having a wonderful Tennessee Christmas...no snow this year though. How interesting that you are listening to an East Tennessee Christmas...I wasn't aware of that album. (I'm not a native). But you can't beat Chet Atkins!

Those aren't my cats....it was a photoshop enhanced card.

Merry Christmas to you there in Indiana, too.

Welcome Lucy,
East TN is a great place. Home of the Smokies. I try to get up that way (from Atlanta) a couple of times a year. Usually visit anywhere from Cades Cove to Cosby and Cataloochee to Oconaluftee on the NC side. Townsend and Maryville are where I usually stay depending on where I am going, unless I go to the Cosby campground. Hiking the Smokies with or even without a camera is hard to beat.

Yes, we do have some beautiful country here. I have visited Cades Cove and it's a real treat! Haven't hiked in the Smokies...I'm not in the best shape for hiking in my 'senior' years. I live near the beautiful Cumberland Mountain
State Park and the Homesteads area here 'on the plateau'.

Thanks Greg....so far I am extremely pleased with the SX40HS....it does everything I want from a camera and is easier for me to take on trips.

Welcome Lucy. Do you know the reason for the difference in the names of the mountains here in our area? I've always called it the Appalachians, regardless of which section I mean, and I know parts are called the Smokies and over here where I am it's referred to as the Blue Ridge. That one's quite understandable when you see the sky line, but do you know where the different sections are? You mentioned the Plateau area, know where that is. Wouldn't it be great if we could go to Scotland and see the other half of this wonderful formation. Anyway, I was trying to find info about all the different names, but none of my books tell me the answers and I thought you might know. See...you're barely here and we're already picking your brain.Welcome to the forum and have a good time here. And you can keep all the snow on your side,K????

Welcome Lucy. Do you know the reason for the diffe... (show quote)

I have thought about that for years, but never bothered to look it up. Since I visit there several times each year, I should know. The Rockies go from being the "canadian" Rockies almost all the way to Mexico. Why such dissimilar names for "our" mountains here in the east? Now you have me thinking. Let's all do our homework on that one.
